Ontario Scout Blog: June 17-19

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, PBR Canada

Our staff was out this weekend in Ajax taking in four games between the Ontario Blue Jays and the Toronto Mets 17U teams with a plethora of the top arms in the league taking the mound at the Sportsplex. Sticking in the Durham area, we also stopped by Kinsmen Stadium on Monday night to get a look at Ontario’s top-ranked 2023 arm with the draft now just three weeks away.

We got a look at several players heading to Division I programs in the next two years but there was plenty of high-end uncommitted talent both on the mound and on the positional side, as well.

Below, we break down the standouts from the past three days on the fields in the Durham Region.

ONTARIO SCOUT BLOG: JUNE 17-19

Keegan O'Hearn LHP / OF / O'Neill CVI, ON / 2023

Our staff got our first look at ‘23 LHP Keegan O’Hearn (Michigan commit) this summer on Monday night in Oshawa and it was an electric two-inning performance from the top-ranked arm in Ontario. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound left-hander sat 91-93 T95 with heavy arm-side run from a tough, low-¾ arm slot. He was consistently getting ahead with the pitch and there were plenty of uncomfortable ABs. Slider is the go-to offspeed pitch at 73-74mph with shape and sweep, as well as a changeup at 81-82mph. He manipulates the slider at times, creating more of a vertical look at 69-70. Impressive stuff from O’Hearn at a good time with the draft now less than a month away.

Brendan Lawson SS / 3B / Lawrence Park, ON / 2024

2024 SS Brendan Lawson (Florida commit) was the biggest standout on the positional side this weekend and started it off with a homerun to the pullside in his first at-bat. The left-handed hitter was consistently looking to do damage at the dish throughout the weekend and following the HR, he came through with a pair of knocks on Sunday. There wasn’t much swing and miss from Lawson between the four games as he continues to do flash his power on the fields here in Canada.

Owen Slater RHP / OF / Brooklin, ON / 2024

2024 RHP Owen Slater (Missouri St. commit) got the start Sunday for OBJ and it was a dominant performance, picking up nine punchouts in four innings without allowing a hit. While it wasn’t the hardest velocity we’ve seen from him, it may have been the most horizontal movement we’ve seen from the pitch which gave hitters problems. The fastball sat 86-88 T89 and had the ability to land the slider for strikes or pound it down for swings/misses. Slater has some of the more intriguing pitch characteristics in Ontario’s 2024 class and that was on full display Sunday.

Luke Glenn RHP / C / Sir William Mulock, ON / 2024

2024 RHP Luke Glenn has really jumped onto the scene this summer and has quickly become one of the more intriguing uncommitted 2024 arms in the province. 6-foot-1, 180-pounds with some projection and strike-throwing abilities. The fastball sat 85-87mph and was effective when working up the zone with it. Only secondary pitch we saw was a slider at 73-76 with sweepy-action and was efficient with both pitches against a strong offensive OBJ lineup. Glenn continues to show well this summer and should be on the radar of college coaches.

Alex Uher RHP / USS, ON / 2025

2025 RHP Alex Uher continues to show some of the better stuff on the mound in Ontario’s 2025 class. Smaller stature at 5-foot-9, 170-pounds with athletic movements and a long, loose arm with the ability to repeat his delivery. The fastball sat 86-88 over 4+ innings and generates good spin on the pitch, up to 2500+ at the Future Games Trials in April. Ability to locate the offspeed stuff for strikes and on Sunday he featured a curveball and slider that both play well off the fastball with different characteristics. The curveball sat 71-74 with tight, top-to-bottom action while the slider was 77-78mph with more of a sweepy-look. Continues to show well in live-game action and had no fear attacking the middle of a strong offensive OBJ team.

Makaio Cisneros RHP / OF / All Saints Catholic secondary school, ON / 2024

Our staff has gotten plenty of looks at 2024 RHP Makaio Cisneros (Central Florida commit) and it may have been the secondary stuff we’ve seen from him. The biggest difference was a firm slider with tight spin at 80-83mph, but was comfortable throwing all three offspeed pitches in any account. The fastball sat 87-89mph and was locating to both sides of the plate. The curveball sat 71-73mph with the changeup at 79-80mph and was working backwards, keeping hitters guessing and inducing plenty of weak contact.

Ryan Press LHP / OF / TanenbaumCHAT, ON / 2024

This was our second look at 2024 LHP Ryan Press (West Virginia commit) and the biggest difference this time around was the low-80s slider he flashed occasionally. It’s a firm slider with late sweep and has the chance to be a putaway pitch as he continues to develop feel for it. The fastball continues to sit in the upper 80s, touching several 89s early on before settling in the mid-80s with minimal effort in the delivery. Arm to keep tabs on over the next year from the Toronto Mets as he continues to develop and refine his secondary stuff.

Lachlan Harrison LHP / OF / Loyola Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2024

2024 LHP Lachlan Harrison got the start on Saturday for the Ontario Blue Jays and continues to show some of the better stuff among uncommitted 2024s in Ontario. 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander with clean mechanics and direction on the mound while also controlling the run-game well. The fastball sat 84-86 T87, coupled with a breaking ball at 73-76mph and generated plenty of swing/miss on both pitches early on. Ran into some trouble later in the outing but an overall good showing from Harrison with minimal hard contact.
