10th annual Super 60 Showcase results

By Sean Duncan

The 10th annual Super 60 Showcase on Sunday just concluded, and I can safely say that the assemblage of talent, from top to bottom, was the best of all-time.

Players from Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa showed what they could do in front of a packed house of pro scouts. And what they did was mighty impressive.

Exactly how good?

Well, let’s start with the pitchers. Of the 29 pitchers, 24 of them were 88-plus on the mound. Eleven of those were 90-plus. Ryan Borucki, a 6-foot-4 LHP from Mundelein HS (IL), flashed the best velocity at 92 mph, and sat 90-91. Borucki’s secondary stuff was equally as electric.

Athletically, the runners were stellar. Of the 38 prospects who ran the 60, 19 of them were sub-7, and 11 of those were 6.8 or below. Ray Hunnicutt, an OF from Burlington Central HS (IL), ran the best 60 at 6.54, followed by SS Adam Walton (Stevenson HS, IL) at 6.59, and Paul Jacobson (Bishop Heelan HS, IA).

The top outfield velocity was Joba Ferrell (Kenwood Academy HS, IL) at 95 mph, followed by 2013 OF/LHP Trey Ball (New Castle HS, IN) at 93 mph. The top infield arm was SS Kevin Ross (Niles West HS, IL) at 90 mph.

Offensively, the top exit velo was OF Nathan Mikolas (Bradford HS, WI) at 99 mph, followed by Ross (96 mph) and 3B Braxton Martinez (Francis Howell North HS, MO). Exit velocities were measured off a tee with wood bats.

Overall, while there were a lot of incredible performances, the biggest show-stopper at the event was Ball, a 6-foot-6 junior from Indiana whose only question is whether he is a better prospect as a position player or as a pitcher. On the day, the left-handed hitting Ball ran a 6.67 60, was 93 from the outfield, took one of the best – if not the best – rounds of BP, and topped at 90 on the mound with a lot more in the tank.

We will have more detailed information later this week, but the Super Bowl is about to start.
