4A Mundelein Regional: Mundelein Beats Glenbrook South

MUNDELEIN, IL – In the 4A Mundelein Regional Semifinal, Mundelein defeated Glenbrook South 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon.

Mundelein jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out Jeff Morton got the inning started with a double and came home on a double from Brendan Murphy. Steven Sanchez followed up with an RBI single. Ryan McGee and Ryan Patel also added RBI singles in the inning to make it 4-0.

Arizona State commit Brendan Murphy was in control through the first five innings of the game allowing just three hits, two runs and striking out ten. At one point Murphy struck out six consecutive hitters.

Mundelein added another four run inning in the bottom of the fifth to push the score to 8-2. Andrew Beres had the big hit in the inning with a two run triple over the centerfielders head.

Murphy was cruising along until the top of the sixth inning when he loaded the bases with no one out. Murphy hit Jake Smiley with the bases loaded before the Mustangs went to the pen. Glenbrook South came away with four runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Mundelein lead to 8-6. Cameron Pauly delivered the big hit with a two run single.

Zach Zentz closed out the game for Mundelein working a quick 1-2-3 seventh, ending the game with a strikeout.

Mundelein will play for the Regional Championship on Saturday at 11:00 AM against the winner of Stevenson and Fremd.
