CLASS 4A SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SUPER

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN
No.12 Edwardsville 9,
Belleville West 0
Edwardsville (31-7) crushed Southwestern Conference rival Belleville West in Granite City on Wednesday night  behind junior Daniel Lloyd. Lloyd (9-0) fired six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits to pick up the win on the mound. Lloyd fanned seven and walked two. Tiger senior Jake Fisher tripled home the first run of the game in the second inning. A five-run Tiger fifth was highlighted by a three-run bomb by junior Aaron Jackson, his fourth round-tripper of the season.

ANDREW

No. 1 Lincoln-Way North 1, Stagg 0
Lincoln-Way North (28-2) slipped past upstart Stagg behind Marian Catholic transfer David Calderon, who fired a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts. The Phoenix scored the only run of the game in the fifth on a Charger miscue.

GLENBROOK SOUTH

Libertyville 7, St.  Viator 2
Libertyville (33-5) blasted the Lions behind a five-hitter from senior Jeff Barton. Barton (8-0) allowed one earned run and struck out six Lion batters. Jimmy Govern continued his assault on the baseball with a single, double and an RBI while Matt Reed was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Hunter VanWagner and Conor Simpson each singled and plated a run for the Wildcats.  

MCHENRY
Prairie Ridge 5, No. 22 Huntley 1
 Red-hot Prairie Ridge (22-16) won for the ninth consecutive time, stunning the Red Raiders in McHenry. Ben Cilano and Jack Meyers combined for a two-hitter while Cal Aldridge had two singles and two RBI to lead the scorching Wolves attack. Cilano allowed an unearned run and two hits in his 5.2 inings of work to pick up the win. Meyers fired 1.1 scoreless innings to nail down the save.

Jacobs 7, Rockton Hononegah 1
Jacobs (24-13-1) smashed the Indians behind Riley Peltier. Peltier allowed one unearned run and one hit in his six masterful innings of work on the mound to pick up the win. Peltier (7-2) had 10 punchouts and three walks. Matt Kozlak singled, homered and plated a Golden Eagle run. Ben Murray singled doubled and plated a pair of runs while Jake Jimi chipped in with two singles an RBI for Jacobs.

No. 5 Batavia 4, West Chicago 1
Batavia (33-3-1) defeated Upstate 8 Conference rival WEGO behind a six hitter from Jake Piechota (8-1). Piechota fanned six and did not walk a man. University of Indiana-bound Lauren Eustace hammered a solo shot for the Bulldogs while University of Minnesota-bound Micah Coffey added a single an RBI for Batavia.  

LOYOLA
Evanston 5, Maine South 2
Evanston (22-13-1) sent home the Wildkits Central Suburban South rivals from MS (25-7) behind Jason Mihevc and Eli Otting. Mihevc singled, tripled and drove home three Wildkit runs while Otting doubled tripled and drove home the other two ‘Kit runs. Dylan Mulvihil (7-2) allowed one earned run and six hits in his six stellar innings on the mound to pick up the win. STAT NOTE: Evanston’s Otting is hitting .395 with nine doubles, three triples, 11 homers and 40 RBI.

BROOKS
De La Salle (23-13) blanked the Romans behind a three-hit shutout from Alex Padilla. Padilla (7-3) struck out a career high 16 batters for the Meteors. Trevino Rodriguez singled and drove home two runs for the Chicago Catholic League White Division co-champions. Joe Gazzi fell a bomb shy of hitting for the cycle.

ROCK ISLAND SUPER

LA SALLE-PERU
Metamora 10,  Rock Island Alleman 5
Metamora (25-12) exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break up a 5-5 game and go on to stun the Pioneers at Veterans Park in  Peru. Brendan Nachtrieb had two singles and drove in four runs to lead the Redbird attack. Drew Beenders added a single and two RBI while Brady Fairchild chipped in with a single and two doubles. Sophomore Geremy Guerrero (6-1) fired a five-hitter to pick up the win on the mound.

No. 24 Peoria Notre Dame 4, Morris 3
Peoria Notre Dame (24-10) slipped past the Redskins behind Bradley-recruit Jake Hurst. Hurst had two singles and an RBI at the plate and then turned the lights out on Morris in the bottom of the seventh to nail down the save for Fighting Irish winning pitcher Truman Ralph (7-1). Morris closes out an outstanding season at 28-10.

ROCHELLE

Sycamore 1, Kaneland 0 (10 innings)
Sycamore (25-12) outlasted its Northern Illinois Big 12 East rivals from Kaneland in nine thrilling innings in Rochelle. Colin Treml went the distance for the Spartans firing a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. Brett Weaver’s solo-bomb in the fifth plated the lone run of this classic.

Fenwick 3,
Nazareth Academy 0
The Chicago Catholic League White Division co-champs from Fenwick blanked the Roadrunners behind an eight-hit shutout from Kevin Forde. Forde (5-2) struck out four and walked two. The Friars scored three times in the third inning and Forde did the rest. Forde and red-hot Mike Krecek had RBI singles in the three-run third for Fenwick (24-10).  

GRAYSLAKE CENTRAL

Grayslake Central 2, Woodstock 1
Grayslake Central (27-10) slipped past Fox Valley Conference Fox rival Woodstock before the home folks in Grayslake. Justin Guryn (10-4) fired a seven-hitter at the Blue Streaks, fanning six and walked two. Pat Burba’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh sent euphoric Ram fans dancing into Lake Street for a Ram victory celebration.  

SAUGET SUPER
SPRINGFIELD SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN

No.6 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 2, No. 8 Champaign Central 0
Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (35-3) won the Top 10 showdown at Comstock Field in Springfield. Ben McElwee (10-0) and Conor Ethridge fired a combined three-hit shutout of the 35-3 Maroons. McElwee allowed two hits in his 5.2 shutout innings while Etheridge allowed one hit in his 1.1 scoreless innings to nail down the save. The Cyclones went ahead 1-0 in the fourth on a Maroon miscue and then picked up an insurance run in the seventh on a sac-fly from Conor White.

Normal U-High 7, Mount Zion 5
The 2012 Class 2A state champs from Normal U-High (25-10-1) are back in the Sweet 16 in 2014 outlasting Mount Zion at Comstock Field in Springfield. Tyler May’s bases-clearing triple busted open the contest in the fifth  nd sent the Pioneers to the Sectional Title Game with SHG Saturday at 11.

TROY-TRIAD
Salem 4, Carbondale 3
Salem (27-9) rallied past the Terriers scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth and then winning in walk-off style in the bottom of the seventh behind Zach Tate. Tate (7-2) went the distance for the Wildcats allowing three runs and nine hits to pick up the win. With one out in the bottom of the seventh Wyatt McGhee ripped a double and would score the Wildcat game-winner when Tate followed with the walk off-double to left. Tate’s blow sent ecstatic Wildcat fans dancing in the streets of Troy.
