Updated Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings

This is the eighth installment of the Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings. Brother Rice’s 30 game winning streak ended this week but they still remain at No. 1 for the fourth straight week with a 32-3 record.

The 3A/4A playoffs get under way today and it is shaping up to be full of upsets. There are a number of teams on the bubble worthy to be in the Top 25 that are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Below is a breakdown of the movement in this week’s Power 25:

Climbing

+ Plainfield North (28-2) – Now No. 2 after going 6-0 on the week and once again sweeping a three game set against a Plainfield High School. The Tigers allowed three runs in their three game sweep of Plainfield Central. They also knocked off No. 4 Lincoln-Way North 7-4, Neuqua Valley 1-0 and Lincoln-Way East 3-1.

+ St. Rita (27-8) – Went 4-1 on the week and took home the Steven Bajenski Tournament title with a 7-2 win over No. 6 Oak Park. Also, defeated St. Laurence and Andrean (IN) en-route to the title. Now No. 5 in the Power Rankings.

+ Oak Park (25-7) – Was the biggest climber of the week jumping 10 spots. Went 6-1 on the week and ended No. 1 Brother Rice’s 30 game winning streak with a 7-6 victory. Also, split with No. 5 St. Rita.

+ Hinsdale South (29-5) – Had an undefeated week once again and our one win shy of a 30 win season. Knocked Downers Grove North 9-3 and York 3-1 on the week. Now sits in the Top 10.

+ Prairie Ridge (29-6) – Went 3-0 on the week and have won 18 out of their last 19 games. Sits at No. 11 in the Power Rankings.

+ St. Joseph-Ogden (31-3) – The Spartans, led by senior ace Dalton Parker, are already under way and the favorites in the 2A state playoffs. Went 3-0 on the week.

+ Marian Catholic (24-10) – Went 3-1 this week including a 1-0 win over No. 12 Providence Catholic.  

Sinking

+ St. Charles North (27-6) – An up and down week for the Stars. Swept a three game set against rival St. Charles East. Later in the week lost 7-6 to Glenbard East and 1-0 New Trier.

+ Providence (25-9) – Went 3-2 on the week. Split with St. Francis and lost to Marian Catholic. Also beat Lemont 13-0 and Marist 4-3.

+ Mount Carmel (24-10) – Dropped three spots after a 2-3 week. Lost twice to No. 1 Brother Rice and once to Marmion 7-5. Knocked off Richards 6-3 and Marist 3-1.

+ Waterloo (23-6) – 1-2 on the week. Split with Civic Memorial and lost to No. 3 O’Fallon. Now sits No. 15 in the Power Rankings.

+ Champaign Central (26-9) – Dropped to No. 23 despite winning the Charlie Due Championship. Went 2-2 on the week. Defeated Mahomet Seymour and Pontiac but lost to Charleston 9-8 and Richwoods 1-0.

New to the Top 25

+ Wauconda (25-4) – No. 18, gets into the Power 25 for the first time this year. Has won 11 games in a row and won the North Suburban Conference baseball title.

+ Sacred Heart-Griffin (25-7) – It has been an up and down season for the Cyclones, who find themselves back into the Power 25 after a 3-0 week and six straight wins.

+ Carmel Catholic (20-9) – Carmel the East Suburban Catholic League Champions get into the Power Rankings for the first time this year. Now No. 21, went 3-0 on the week.

+ Springfield (28-5) – A statement win over No. 7 Edwardsville helped propel the Senators into the Top 25 for the first time this year.

+ Morton – Went 3-1 on the week with a win over Richwoods and two over Washington. The Potters won the Mid Illini conference outright going 13-1 in the league. The Potters also outscored conference opponents 121-16 on the year.
