Ohio Spotlight Game: No. 43 Twinsburg vs No. 45 Mayfield

EASTLAKE - After being down early, Twinsburg cranks out 16 hits and 14 runs (13 unanswered) against seven different pitchers, to beat Mayfield 14-4.

Twinsburg struck first in the top of the first with a leadoff single from leadoff hitter Jason Stahlman (Uncommitted, #229 ranked in 2018 class).

Stahlman swiped second and moved to third on a wild pitch on two consecutive pitches. Mayfield starting pitcher Richard Handel (Uncommitted senior, #190 ranked in 2017 class) then got the next two batters out by inducing a flyout to the first baseman, and a hard hit groundout to the third baseman, who went to his knees to block the ball, looked Stahlman back at third, and fired to first for the second out. Cleanup hitter Tyler Garing was able to drive in the run with a two-out RBI single to center field, putting Twinsburg up 1-0 early.

Twinsburg’s starting pitcher Carson Leo wasted no time the first time through Mayfield’s batting order, retiring 8 of the 9 hitters with 3 groundouts, 4 flyouts, a strikeout, and a hit batsman. With two outs in the third inning, Mayfield was able to get to Leo and stringed together five straight singles, a sixth coming off relief pitcher Jake Carinci, to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead.

Twinsburg quickly responded in the top of the fourth with two runs of its own, making the score 4-3. Tyler Garing led off the inning with a triple to the gap in left centerfield. Jake Carinci was walked on four straight pitches. Chad Szydlowski (Uncommitted senior, ranked #403 in 2017 class) drove in Garing and moved Carinci to second with an RBI groundout. A wild pitch put Carinci at third with one out, and sophomore Dylan Jackson plated him with a single to left field.

Twinsburg looked to get every player in the game, making defensive substitutes in the fifth, and keeping that lineup the rest of the game.

With six new hitters in the lineup, Twinsburg scored eight runs on five hits, three walks, and two errors.

Jake Carinci remained in the lineup and drew his second walk to lead off the inning. Terrence Chambers hit a double to right center field to plate Carinci, one of his two RBI hits in the inning. Carvonte Williams and Max Brazie both worked the count and drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Chambers and company all moved up on a wild pitch, which put Twinsburg up 5-4. Justin Laley drove in a run with a single to left field and another wild pitch brought home Williams. With runners on second and third, Jon Szydlowski placed a perfect bunt down the first base line for an RBI single. After a groundout for the first out of the inning, Cristian Tejada (Miami (OH) commit, #60 ranked 2017 class) collected his third hit of the ballgame with an RBI single to right center. Mayfield was able to get the second out on a groundout, but ran into trouble again after a fielding error put runners at first and second, and Terrence Chambers drove in another run with his second hit of the inning, a single to left field. Another fielding error plated Carinci for the eighth run of the inning.

Mayfield looked to answer in the bottom of the sixth, now down 11-4, collecting three straight singles to the outfield with one out, but was unable to score any runs after two infield flyouts.

Twinsburg extended their lead in the seventh, loading the bases on three straight singles as well. A sac fly to right field off the bat of Tyler Garing made it 12-4 and advanced the runner to third. Matt Mickovic, who singled to left, scored on a wild pitch, and Cristian Tejada, who also singled to left for his fourth hit of the game, moved up to second. Jake Carinci made it a ten run ballgame with another single to left field.

Ohio Spotlight Game: No. 44 Eastlake North vs Willoughby South

EASTLAKE - Willoughby South’s Steve D’eusanio goes the distance against Eastlake North, earning himself a complete game victory, in a 5-4 battle between crosstown rivals.

Even though the game was played in the city of Eastlake, Willoughby South was the home team. That didn’t seem to bother Eastlake North as they quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler Nagorski hit a chopper between the mound and the third base line that he was able to beat out for an infield single, but the pitcher’s throw sailed wide and Nagorski went all the way to third on the error. The next batter, Charlie Finucan (Uncommitted senior) singled to center field to drive in the run.

Willoughby South was able to win the first inning, however, scoring two runs on two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman. Dom Prevesk got the inning started with a one-out double down the right field line. Jack Elliott was grazed by a fastball and Steve D’eusanio drew a walk to load the bases. Connor Ashurst drove in Prevesk with a single to left center and with two outs and the bases loaded, Brad Richmond worked a walk to make the score 2-1.

South again scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning, all with two outs. Dom Prevesk singled to right field with two outs to “start” the inning for the Rebels and Jack Elliott walked. A wild pitch put runners at second and third for cleanup hitter Steve D’eusanio who smacked a double down the right field line, making the score 4-1.

North answered back in the top of the third with a run of their own, also doing everything with two outs and nobody on. Leadoff hitter Ken Streb (Uncommitted junior) singled to right field and proceeded to steal second on the next pitch. Tyler Nagorski laced a single to left centerfield to score Streb, and the deficit was down to two.

South had better ideas, again scoring a run with two outs and nobody on base. Juan Broom (Ohio State commit, #21 ranked in 2017 class) singled to left field and after an Adam Wilson walk, the line up turned back over to the top, where Matt Buck drove in Broom on an RBI single to left field.

Zach Mitchell got things started again for Eastlake North with a single to left with only one out in the bottom of the fifth. Ken Streb drove in Mitchell with a triple that bounced around in the right field corner. Now with two outs, it looked like North would strand Streb at third base, but a fielding error by South made it a one run ball game, 5-4.

In the sixth, Eastlake North was hoping to work some two out magic again, this time with Jake Arrison hitting a single right back up the middle. A throwing error pulled the first baseman off the bag and with two outs, runners at first and second, D’eusanio recorded his sixth strikeout of the game to end the frame. Eastlake North went 1-2-3 in the seventh, the score being 5-4.

Eastlake North SS Ken Streb: Went 2-4 on the night with a single, an RBI triple, a run, and a stolen base. Also pitched the seventh, allowing 0 hits and 2 walks.
