CALGARY SUMMER OPEN: QUICK HITS

Simon Baker OF / RHP / Cochrane, AB / 2024

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Webber Academy product had one of the better overall days at the Summer Open. It started with the 60-yard dash putting up an impressive time of 6.78. On the mound, he sat 83-84 topping out at 85 mph. Out of an over-the-top arm slot, he generates a high release point and a steep VAA, making it difficult on hitters to get the ball in the air. At the dish, where he excelled with the Canadian JNT this past summer, he showed us why he is one of the more mature hitters in the 2024 class in the country. His physical frame allows him to produce an aggressive but controlled approach generating loud contact throughout his entire round. Finishing off with the best exit velocity on the day of 92 mph. He also got up to 91 mph from the OF, the highest of the event. Baker is a must follow as his hit/power tool continues to develop.

Kai Rempel RHP / National Sport School, AB / 2024

Rempel showed us why he’ll be representing Alberta at the Canada Cup this fall. He showed an easy, repeatable delivery and impressive control of all 4 of his offerings down in the zone. Ran his fastball up to 85 mph, sitting 82-84 mph. He tunnels his pitches well out of the same ¾ arm slot and nothing is straight. His fastball has armside run while his changeup dives as it nears the plate. Both his curveball and slider have unique movement patterns. The slider has more horizontal break while the curveball has vertical depth to it. Rempel is one of the better uncommitted 2024 RHPs in Alberta and he’ll be someone to follow as the season continues.

Dylan Chopp OF / 3B / William Aberhart, AB / 2024

Chopp was another Webber Academy product that had a solid day at the Calgary Summer Open. He got up to 87 mph from the OF before having an impressive round of BP. Utilizing quiet hands and a powerful back-leg load he generates impressive bat speed and barrel control getting the ball in the air to all fields with authority. He’ll be an intriguing follow to see if his approach at the dish translates to in-game success.

George Hobbins 3B / RHP / Central Memorial, AB / 2025

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound RHP started off his day with an impressive bullpen. Hobbins got up to 83 mph, sitting 81-82. He possesses a low-effort delivery and loose arm with a ¾ arm slot. His sinker has more arm side run to it than depth, which comes in at 80-82 mph. His curveball has vertical depth out of the same slot which compliments both primary offerings well as it changes the eye-level of the hitters. On the infield, Hobbins was able to get up to 83 mph across the diamond.

Karter Scott C / RHP / Martin Collegiate, SK / 2024

Scott was a standout behind the dish at the Calgary Summer Open. He put up an event-best 2.00 POP time aided by a quick transfer and was 2nd with a 74 mph throw during the throwdowns. At the dish, a toe tap load allows him to consistently drive balls back up the middle on a line. He won’t blow you away with power, but the simple approach and swing will mean he finds barrels on a consistent basis.
