Lethbridge Spring Open ID: Quick Hits

Brady Turner/Braden Persian
PBR Alberta Staff

On Thursday, April 27th, PBR Alberta hosted its 6th showcase of the season with the Lethbridge Spring Open ID at Prairie Baseball Academy. The event gave our staff a look at roughly 25 players in the 2023 - 2027 classes from the Lethbridge and surrounding areas.

Open showcases such as this one allow our staff to see players from several different classes which will help formulate our update rankings. They also serve as identifiers for some of PBR's marquee events that Western Canada attends, including the Future Games, Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games and more.

All players ran through a pro-style workout which included a 60-yard dash, defensive evaluation and velocities from all positions, as well as batting practice for hitters and bullpens for the arms.

Below, we conclude our post-event coverage with reports and video on five standouts from the event.

LETHBRIDGE SPRING OPEN ID: QUICK HITS

Colton Ullyett-French 3B / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2027

The physical 6-foot-2,220-pound 2027 had one of the better overall days at the event. It started on the mound where he got up to 78 mph with the fastball while pounding the zone with all 3 of his offerings. His curveball has some late bite that will become more effective as he works on locating it down. At the dish, Ulyett-French was just as impressive. He was able to get the ball in the air with authority, producing the highest exit velocity on the day of 90 mph, despite being one the younger players. He’ll be an intriguing follow this coming season to see what he’s able to do in game action.

Tye Carrier C / RHP / Lethbridge Collegiate Institute , AB / 2025

Carrier was another standout on both sides of the ball. On the mound, he impressed with his slider and splitter combination. The splitter had late downward action while his slider had horizontal sweep to it creating two unique offerings, with the fastball up to 77 mph. At the plate, he used a simple line drive, back up the middle approach. Showed feel for the barrel making consistent, solid contact. Also showed well behind the dish, accurately getting the ball down to second base with ease.

Joseph Bews OF / RHP / All Saints, AB / 2022

The unsigned senior showed well on the mound in Lethbridge. Has a loose arm and three offerings that come out of the same ¾ slot. The fastball got up to 79 mph while sitting in the 76-77 range. His changeup has some fade which can create some deception when paired well with his fastball. The hard slider, coming in at 71-72 mph, has late horizontal break to it that has the opportunity to create some swing/miss when located properly. The Calgary Blues product will be someone to follow this coming season.

Alexandre Laurence C / 2B / Vauxhall, AB / 2025

Laurence was one of the top performers on the day, displaying
a solid and powerful swing. The Quebec native brings a full field approach while showing some pull side power, with a peak exit velocity of 85mph. Behind the plate Laurence flashes quick hands and a strong arm, getting the ball out in a hurry with a pop-time of 1.95 at 71mph. On the infield, Laurence was smooth and confident while working through the baseball, before once again flashing a strong arm getting the ball across the diamond at 79mph. Laurence was the fastest runner of the day clocking a 7.00 flat 60-yard dash. Laurence is a good looking 2025 grad to keep eyes on.

Beck Button LHP / 1B / Central Memorial, AB / 2025

Button was the top arm of the event, throwing four pitches for strikes. His 4-seam and 2-seam fastballs both sat 78-80mph with good arm side run. Button followed up the fastball with a changeup that sat 72-74mph and a curveball with late, sharp break at 67-69mph. At the plate, Button demonstrated a short and compact swing, producing line drives that worked up to 80mph. The Wildcats product is a young 2025 grad that should have a bright future.
