OPELIKA, AL - After the release of the Alabama Power 25 Rankings were released, the 7A Auburn Tigers, who sit at the top at No. 1, traveled across town to take on arch-rival 6A Opelika at Opelika High School. The Tigers gave the ball to LHP/OF Will Turner (2021, South Alabama) and the Bulldogs countered with RHP Brantley Davis (2022).
After both teams tossed a scoreless 1st inning, Auburn struck first in the top of the 2nd. C Peyton Williams (2021) started off the frame by crushing a fastball to deep left field for a stand-up double. After a sacrifice bunt & a walk, OF Brendan Wall (2022) recorded one of his three hits he had on the night, as he singled over the shortstop’s head to make the score 1-0 early on.
The Tigers struck again in the top of the 3rd for multiple runs to make the score 4-0. Auburn first scored on an error by the right fielder, but added two more runs on another single from OF Brendan Wall (2022) to center field. LHP/OF Will Turner (2021, South Alabama) was in control throughout his three innings of work on the mound. He tossed three hitless innings, while striking out eight & walking four. His fastball reached 89 mph in the 1st.
Auburn scored a run in the 5th & 6th innings, with OF/C Walker Zapp (2022; Future Games) doubling down the left field line in the 5th and 3B Patrick McGlon (2022) driving home OF Will Turner (2021, South Alabama), who reached on one his two doubles of the night, on a sacrifice fly to center field in the 6th. Auburn broke the game open in the top of the 7th, as four Tigers came home to score in the inning. One of those runs came from OF Brendan Wall (2022), who doubled to extend the Tiger lead to 7-0. The other three runs in the inning came from a fielder’s choice, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. The Tigers would go on to throw a scoreless bottom of the 7th to close out a 10-0 victory.
