Alabama High School Team Preview: Bibb County Choctaws

PBR Alabama Staff

The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all- time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Outlook:

Bibb County will look to depend on their pitching and defense in 2021 and will be looking for some returners, and newcomers alike, to help generate some runs. Leading the way on the mound is junior LHP Steven Cash. The southpaw commands the zone with 3 pitches while solid mechanics and a smooth delivery. He simply gets good hitters out and keeps them off balance. Another junior, RHP Dillon Williams also returns. Williams shows a solid low 80's fastball on the mound with good stuff. He is very athletic with ability to change arm slots and is a competitor that finds a way to get people out. Senior 1B Cade Horton is one of the returning position players that will be looked on to lead the offense. Horton isa solid first baseman with power to all fields as evidenced by his 10 home runs as a sophomore. Another big bat that returns to the Choctaw lineup is DH/1B Bo Burkes. The physical junior was the top hitter on last years team (.382 BA) before the season was abruptly ended. He handles the bat well and hits to all fields with power. A few young guys are in a position to help this year and in the next few years. Sophomore RHP Chris Billingsley shows a low to mid 80's fastball with a long frame and he is sttill learning to master his pitches but he has a high ceiling. Sophomore catcher John Downs receives the ball very well and will compete for the varisty catching the job in 2021. The athletic sophomore is also a swithch hitter at the plate. There are a souple of intriguing freshman to keep an eye as well. One of those is SS/RHP Matthew Cash. The younger Cash is a really athletic player that handles the bat well and is really solid defensively. He will compete for playing time on the varsity in 2021. Ty Burkes is a freshman outfielder with a bright future ahead of him. He is a solid defender and swings the bat well from the left side. The Choctaws will be a formidable opponent in 4A this season.
