Montgomery Open: Quick Hits

PBR Alabama Staff

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Montgomery Open was held on Wednesday, June 28th at Stanhope Elmore HS in Millbrook, AL. This was an open event that consisted of prospects in the 2024-2026 classes. These players went through a pro-style workout and took batting practice using Trackman to record hitting metrics. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Wednesday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the event. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

Jacob Driver RHP / 1B / Marbury, AL / 2025

Uncommitted. Physical 6-foot-3, 200-pounds with noticeable lower-half strength to his build. Showcased some of the best two-way ability from the event and possesses possibly more upside on the mound. Pitches from mainly a hybrid windup, and syncs into lower-half well throughout his delivery. Really pulls down on the fastball and looks to drive it through the zone. Good fastball metrics with an average above 19 in. of induced vertical break, making the ball seem to carry through the zone while sitting 85-86 mph throughout his bullpen. Mixed three distinct secondary offerings with mid-60s curveball showing some shape and low-70s changeup featuring heavy arm-side fade. Cutter is a quality fourth offering sitting 74-77 mph with some late movement to it. Can also bang the ball around the yard offensively using a gap-to-gap approach that registered exit velocities in the low-90s. Good uncommitted rising junior to follow in AL.

Tabor Offord OF / Saint James, AL / 2025

Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 170-pounds. Medium-sized frame with some present athleticism throughout. Arguably the biggest winner from the event turning in a solid all-around workout and posting near the top of most statistical categories. Showed off the athleticism to start the day with a 6.77 60 YD, which turned out to be an event-best. Continued to showcase well with a mature round of BP where he consistently delivered firm contact to the baseball using a fairly level path. He has present bat speed and registered consistent low-90 EVs with a top of 94.5 mph, second-best from the event. Swings the bat from the right side with controlled aggression and showed the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap within his approach. Another quality uncommitted rising junior to follow in AL.

Grant Horne C / Northside Methodist Academy, AL / 2024

Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 185-pounds. Stocky, durable build with prototypical catchers frame. Proportional strength throughout his build including a thick lower-half. Another prospect that ranked near the top of most statistical categories and established himself as a quality follow for the next year and a half. Turned in a loud round of BP registering a top exit velocity at 94.1 mph and posted an 87.8 mph average exit velocity, an event-best. Hits from a square, slightly crouched stance with hands slotted closer to his body. Really quick load pushes his hands back for load and uses plenty of torque and rotation to generate firm contact with each swing. Pull-side approach and led nearly every Blast Motion category. Posted 1.94-2.07 pops and a 75 mph velocity, also event-bests.

Koen Sampley 3B / RHP / Marbury, AL / 2025

Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 180-pounds. Medium frame with some present strength. Room to add more in the future and moves well laterally on the infield for his size. One of the top offensive performers during BP posting a clean round with the ability to find the sweet spot with nearly each swing. Possesses smooth actions all-around and swings the bat from the right side with controlled aggression with the intent to drive the ball gap-to-gap. Posted consistent low-90 EVs during his round to go along with some bat speed. Possesses the frame to stick on the left side of the infield. Accurate arm across the infield with top infield velocity at 83 mph that will be sure to add. Has some two-way ability on the mound with a fastball up to 86 mph and a good slider.

Hayden Berry OF / RHP / Helena , AL / 2024

Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 165-pounds. Really lean and athletic build. Still some projection left with room to add strength in the future. Possesses solid skills all-around and is a quality prospect in the rising senior class in AL that is still on the market. Weight stays on his back-side long enough in his swing and uses a mostly direct path to contact to meet the ball. Good hand speed with a slightly uphill path through the zone. Lived gap-to-gap within his approach during his round of BP where he posted some low-90 EVs. Accurate thrower from the outfield on throws to the plate and moves well in the grass. Developing arm strength at 81 mph. Intriguing left-handed hitter with a smooth swing that is one to follow over the course of the next year.
