PBR Jr. Future Games: Alabama Day 3 Recap

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

EMERSON, GA - The 9th Annual PBR Jr. Future Games played its final day of pool play games with each team playing a single game across both age groups. After taking part in a pro-style workout on Tuesday, teams were eager to compete against other states while representing their own state today. With numerous college coaches watching on as teams competed throughout the day at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA, numerous players from Team Alabama showed out en route to a solid day across both age groups.

This event runs in conjunction with the PBR Future Games. The Future Games features the top uncommitted players in the Class of 2024 and 2025 from across the Prep Baseball Report’s 40+ state coverage area. It is one of the most highly recruited events of the summer and attracts more than 300 college coaches from across the country each year.

Today, we take a look back with a brief recap of each game, including players who stood out on all three teams representing the state of Alabama.

Team Alabama 13U

Alabama 13U faced off against Florida this morning in what turned into a high hitting contest for the Alabama squad that ended in a 9-6 win. Alabama fell behind in the early going, trailing 5-0, but battled their way back into the contest. After being no-hit through their first three innings, the Alabama offense got things rolling, collecting 15 hits in the remainder of the game.

Once the bats starting to heat up, the offense was lead by a handful of Alabama players, eight of which collected a hit in the contest. INF Beckett Brown (Parkview, GA), SS Hudson Smith (James Clemens), SS Connor Greb (Spain Park), C/3B Evan Taylor (Spain Park), RHP/SS Gavin Lang (Collinsville), C/SS Keaton Coffee (Corner), RHP/3B Brodie Wilson (Faith Academy) all gathered two hits each in route to the Alabama 9-6 win over Florida.

Getting the nod on the mound was RHP Andrew Bennett (Mobile Christian), who worked the fastball in the low-to-mid-80's and ran it up to 87 mph multiple times. Easy, athletic delivery with plenty of room to make an increase in velocity in the years to come.

Alabama 13U will be back in action tomorrow facing Michigan at 10:15 AM EST on Field 15 in the 1st round of bracket play.

Alabama 14U (1)

In a rain-shortened contest in the nightcap, Alabama 14U (1) was able to defeat Illinois by a score of 5-0 to improve to 2-1 on the week and set themselves up well in bracket play. SS/RHP Rhys Jones (Spain Park) was one of the stars of the night doing it on both sides of the ball in the contest. Getting the start on the mound and going the distance in the rain-shortened game, Jones twirled 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB & a K while working up to 78 mph with his fastball and pounding the zone. He also doubled down the LF line in one of his two at-bats of the night.

Alabama (1) only recorded four hits offensively, but used situational hitting and team speed to manufacture five runs throughout the three innings. In addition to Jones’ double, C Aiden Gaston (Mobile Christian) delivered a triple down the RF line, C Canaan Whitman (Oxford) also doubled and scored a run, and SS Rhett Persell (Lincoln County, TN) drove home a run on an RBI single to LF.

Alabama 14U (1) will be back in action tomorrow facing Michigan at 12:30 PM EST on Field 13 in the 1st round of bracket play.

Alabama 14U (2)

Alabama (2) improved to 3-0 on the week with a walk-off infield single with time being expired in the bottom of the 6th inning to win 4-3 over Team Mid-Atlantic (2). Alabama (2) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the middle innings and held it for the majority of the game. Mid-Atlantic (2), however, would come back to tie the contest at 3-3 in the top of the 6th with multiple base hits to set the stage for the offense in the bottom half. Alabama (2) would eventually load the bases with two outs, and got an RBI infield single to the left side from INF Bryon Martin (St. Paul’s Episcopal) who was able to put his speed on display and reach first base safely to secure the win.

Alabama (2) received multiple contributions both at the plate and on the mound en route to the victory. Most notably, OF/RHP Matt Hopkinson (Home School) posted a 3-for-3 day at the plate and mixed in a walk in his other at-bat. He also worked in relief on the mound, going 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB & a K while touching 79 mph with his fastball. OF Jackson Burgess (North Sand Mountain) also provided a big run-scoring single to LF in the earlier innings to give Alabama (2) the lead. RHP/1B Brayden Dockery (Helena) got the nod on the mound, and went 1.0 IP, H, 0 R & 3 K’s.

Team Alabama (2) will be back in action tomorrow facing off against the winner of Mid-Atlantic (1)/Georgia (2) at 5:00 PM EST on Field 16 in the 2nd round of bracket play.
