Top Prospect Games: Gray Team Analysis

On June 24-25 PBR Indiana hosted the second annual Top Prospect Games at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN on the beautiful all-turf Bart Kaufman field.

Indiana's Top Prospect Games has quickly established itself as one of the premier events in the Midwest with over 100 players participating in the event each of the last two years. 

Below we take a look at notes on players from Team Gray: 

In Alphabetical Order by First Name

Carter Poiry, RHP/ SS, Hamilton SE HS, 2016; 6 foot-3 inches/ 185 pounds, On the mound he threw from a low ¾ slot with a quick, loose delivery. Fastball was 82-86mph with hard sink and in the zone. Slider 71-73 mph with very little movement.  With the bat he hit from a balanced stance with a short stride, dives at the ball, hits of front foot, slap hitter. Has average hands with the glove, fluid feet and a good ball transfer with plus range to his glove side.

Clay Dungan, MIF, Yorktown HS, 2015; 5 foot-11 inches/165 pounds,  Short arm action, always on target. Overall athletic actions with good hands and quick feet. Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride. Average bat speed with a slight upper cut. Line drive hitter.

DJ Moore, RHP/INF, Homestead HS, 2015; 6 foot-1 inch/ 160 pounds, Quick ¾ arm delivery, fastball 83-84mph with downhill plain and arm side run. Slider is 69-70mph with late break; 73 mph changeup had some sink. He has long arms, his delivery is easy and loose, and ball jumps out of his hand. Fills up the strike zone with three pitches. Confident pitcher. He hits from a balanced stance with a smooth, short stride, doesn’t miss pitches, makes adjustments on the fly. Average bat speed with a good feel for hitting. Fields his position well and can play multiple positions.

Dalton Leighty, RHP, Western HS, 2016; 6 foot-3 inches/ 190 pounds, Strong, athletic right hand pitcher, fastball is 88-90mph with heavy sink and in the zone. Slider was 75-78mph with late break. Change up was 80-82mph. Max effort guy with a ¾ slot and a long, quick release. Ball jumps out of his hand. Displayed pitchability and had a good feel for the game. Fielded his position well. Going to be a very good college arm with possible professional opportunities.

Drew Bertram, INF, Zionsville HS, 2016; 6 foot/ 180 pounds, R/R, Athletic player, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride. He has average bat speed on a level plain, lines drive hitter that will hit for power with added strength. Fielded his position well, 76 mph across the infield and on target with good hands and actions.

Jacob Hammel, SS/RHP, Hamilton Height HS, 2015; 6 foot-3 inches/ 155 pounds, Lanky, athletic player with room to fill out. Hits out of crouched stance with a long stride and a long path to the ball.  Long ¾ arm, throws had carry and were on target. Average hands and feet at his position.  74mph across the infield. On the mound his fastball was 77-79mph and in the zone, Slider was 65-69mph with gradual break.

Jimmy Kizer, C/3b, Ben Davis HS, 2016; 6 foot-1 inch, 175 pounds, 2.09-2.19 pop time. Strong catcher with a short ¾ arm, throws were consistently on target. He has soft hands and receives well, feet are quick and he has a good ball transfer.  Aggressive hitter with a short, balanced stride. Long path to the ball. Very good catch and throw guy.

Jonathon Albomonte, OF, Adrean HS, 2015; 5 foot-11 inches/180 pounds, Athletic player, throws 81mph from the outfield with good hands and feet. Plays hard and is aggressive at the plate. Short, smooth stride with a good eye for the strike zone. Average bat speed with good extension through contact, will hit for power.

Justin Jenkins, OF/LHP, Terra Haute South, 2016; 5 foot-10 inches/170 pounds, L/L, Fastball is 79-80mph with some movement and consistently  in the strike zone. ¾ arm delivery and occasionally drops down to create deception, hard to square up. Slider was 71-72mph with late break. Good athlete that knows how to get guys out. Line drive hitter that will hit for average. Smooth, short stride, balanced stance with average bat speed and a short, quick path to the ball. 

Max McCool, RHP, Westfield HS, 2016; 6 foot/170 pounds, Athletic pitcher with a feel for pitching. Fastball is 81-82mph with a quick ¾ arm delivery; Slider is 68-71 with late break. Change up was 71 with sink. Young player that will improve with strength.

Nick Kiehl, OF/INF, Hamilton SE HS, 2015; 5 foot-9 inches/165 pounds, Strong  and athletic frame. Has a short stride from a balanced hitting stance, Line drive hitter with a slight upper cut. Throws 78 mph from the outfield with a long ¾ arm, throws are on target. He has average hands and feet with a good athletic ball transfer.

Nick Podkul, MIF, Andrean HS, 2015; 6 foot- 1inch/180 pounds, R/R, Very athletic player, will be able to play multiple positions. Displays good actions and plays hard. Throws 80 mph across the infield and on target. Soft hands and quick feet and takes good routes to the ball. Hits from an open stance with a long stride, bats stays on plain, gap to gap type hit.

Riley Welch, LHP/OF, Hanover Central HS, 2015; 6 foot-4 inches/ 190 pounds, Lanky, LHP, 73-75mph fastball with downhill plain and in the zone.  Long ¾ arm slot with slow delivery. Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride and average bat speed.

Sam Claycamp, 3B/SS, Columbus East HS, 2015; 6 foot-3 inches/ 210 pounds, Short arm infielder, 78mph from SS to 1st on target. Average hands and feet with a good ball transfer. Balanced hitting stance with a long stride and a fast bat and good extension through contact. Will hit for average and power.

Skylar Szynski,RHP/OF, Mishawaka Penn HS, 2016; 6 foot-2 inches/195 pounds, L/R, Strong , athletic player with wide shoulders and narrow hips. He is a high school two way guy that will be a pitcher at the next level. Fastball was 88-90 with an easy ¾ arm delivery. Ball jumps out of his hand and has downhill plain and is consistently in the strike zone. He has a sweeping slider (70-72mph) , and a serviceable changeup .  At the plate he has short, compact swing and he squares up pitches.

T.J. Harmon, RHP, Lafayette McCutcheon HS, 2015The 6-foot-2 righty showcased good confidence on the mound with a heavy 85-87 mph fastball consistently in the zone.  Throws a 71-73 mph curveball with a late, sharp break; solid out pitch.  Pitches from a 3/4 slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action is short.  Overall easy effort.  

Tim Lira, C/3B,Mishawake Penn HS, 2015; 6 foot/200 pounds, 2.11-2.26 pop time. Athletic catcher with a strong base. Short, quick arm, throws were on target with carry. Average hands (Catches with two hands) and feet with a clean ball transfer. Faster feet would lower his pop time. Has a open hitting stance with a top hand wrap, long stride, average bat speed on a level path to the ball. Pull hitter.

Travis Upp,1B/OF, LaPorte HS, 2016; 6 foot- 1 inch/ 180 pounds, L/R, Long arm from the outfield, throws on target. Short stride with a slight hitch in his load, slap hitter.

Tyler Richardson, 1B/OF, Knightstown HS, 2015; 6 foot/210 pounds, L/L, Throws from a  quick, low ¾ slot, throws across the infield were on target. He has average hands and plays hard.  Short smooth stride from a balanced hitting stance and slight upper cut.

Wyatt Daly, C/3B, Castle HS, 2015; 5 foot- 10 inches/ 175 pounds, 1.97-2.07 pop time. Strong, athletic catcher with quick feet and a quick release. Works well behind the plate with average hands and a quick ball transfer. Hits in a balanced stance with a short stride and average bat speed and good extension through contact. Line drive hitter that is capable of hitting for power.
