Last Saturday, February 14, more than 100 players from all corners of the state convened at Champions Baseball Academy in Nicholasville for the third annual Preseason All-State Showcase. While most of the players in attendance were Class of 2016, 2017, and 2018 graduates, there was a small, but very solid group of unsigned seniors in attendance.

Below we take a look at the four unsigned seniors who participated in the event.

Layne Peavler, R/R, MIF, Mercer County HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 160-pound MIF showed off his athleticism at the event. Possesses plus speed as evidenced by his 6.65 60-yard dash, right-handed hitter, small strike zone and speed make him a true lead-off type hitter who will use speed well at the next level in his offensive game, hits from a slightly open stance with a mid-length stride, minimal load, level swing path with flat finish, line drive type hitter, 87 mph exit velocity. Defensively shows athletic actions, good lateral movement in both directions, tends to field the ball with throwing hand away from glove hand leading to longer exchange, gets rid of the ball with short arm action, accurate throws, 76 mph velocity (79 at previous event).

Jacob Crouch, 3B, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2015
6-foot-4, 205-pound prospect has made obvious strength gains in the weight room, right-handed hitter had an solid round of batting practice with consistent hard line drives, starts with an open stance, short stride, generates good bat speed through the zone, showed his best exit velocity to date at 86 mph, ran a 7.76 60-yard dash. Defensively, showed a jump in arm strength at 86 mph across the infield, soft hands, good body control on slow roller play with the ability to throw accurately on the move, has put a lot of work into getting stronger and continues to make improvements in his game.

Brandon Wilson, LHP, Ballard HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect with good pitcher’s frame, uses long arm action and works through a high-3/4 slot, up tempo delivery and rushes some through balance point, easy effort delivery, showed a slight increase in velocity from event in December, fastball is mostly straight at 81-82 mph and touched 84 on one occasion, showed improved feel for 66-68 mph curveball with 1/7 action, 71-73 mph changeup is straight and thrown with good arm speed, interesting lefty with good size and upside who has potential for more velocity and improvement of secondary pitches.

Jason Bronnert, C, R/R, Pleasure Ridge Park HS, 2015
5-foot-8, 171-pound prospect with strong lower half, right-handed hitter starts in an open stance, short stride, shows an aggressive approach at the plate, good power for size especially to the pull side, good bat speed with extension through contact, ball jumps off bat, ran 7.83 60-yard dash, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows average arm strength, 71 mph velocity from the crouch, pop times ranged from 2.21-2.35 and have room to improve with quicker release and footwork, good setup behind the plate, solid receiver with good hands, sound blocking mechanics.
