AROUND THE HORN: WEEK 5 (March 11-17)

 

POWER 25

+ No. 3 Germantown Mavericks

Germantown has been amongst the top of our Power 25 Rankings since the initial preseason release and they have found their way into the No. 3 spot over the last couple of weeks as they sit behind Jackson Prep and Lewisburg. Out to a (12-3) start to the 2024 spring season, the Mavericks have a tough test coming their way this week as they match up in district play against No. 11 Tupelo on both Tuesday and Friday. Friday night one of our scouts will be in Tupelo for the premier matchup. So far this spring, the Mavericks have had statement wins over Brandon, Northwest Rankin, UMS Wright (AL), McGill-Toolen (AL), Faith Academy (AL), and Madison Central. With another pair of tough games on the schedule this week, expect the Mavericks to not shy away with district play on the line.

+ No. 23 George County Rebels

The Rebels are another team making noise through the early part of the season and now sit at 9-1 and #23 in this week's Power 25. With a balanced attack which see’s the offense hitting at a .326 clip, the pitching staff holding down a 1.15 team ERA, and solid defense, the Rebels are primed to make a run in 6A. Ben Davis is leading the way at the plate with a .464 average, with Gage Reeves and Andrew Nielsen providing the power with 3 home runs each. On the mound Nielsen (4-1, 0.00 ER) and Canyon Reeves (2-0, 0.84) have been very stingy to opposing lineups with Future Gamer Preston McAdory providing quality innings as well. We look forward to seeing this group in action soon.

+ No. 24 Northeast Jones Tigers

The Tigers have been very solid in the first half of the season and we’ve been following their progress after seeing them a few weeks ago. Winning 9 of their last 10 games including a 3-0 contest over rival West Jones, they break in at #24 in the latest Power 25. On offense the Tigers are led by East Central CC recruit Kaden Padgett and his .475 batting average, 9 doubles and 19 runs batted in. The offense is also getting production from uncommitted 2025 Cruz Sullins who is hitting .341 with 2 home runs and 16 RBI’s. On the mound, uncommitted junior Ryne Herrington has been a workhorse, throwing 30 innings with a 5-0 record and a miniscule 0.47 ERA. The 4A class is very strong this season and the Tigers will look to add their names as contenders!
