AROUND THE HORN: WEEK 6 (March 18-24)

POWER 25

+ No. 17 South Jones Braves

#17 South Jones moves into the top spot in the 5A after an 11-4 start to 2024. The Braves headed into the season knowing they had a solid one-two punch on the mound with Cole Richardson and Dylan Causey, both Southern Miss recruits, leading the way. Both have been impressive as they approach mid season as Richardson is 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA and Causey sits at 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA. They have received some extra help as Alden Spencer has stepped up with 3 wins against no losses and a 1.07 ERA of his own. On the offensive side, Cambridge McDaniel has been productive with 3 long balls and a team leading 18 RBI’s. Chase Billiot leads all starters with a .385 batting average followed by Ryley Parker at .378, and Richardson at .360. South Jones has won 6 in a row and faces a solid Florence team this week in district play.

DATE TEAM SCORE
3/19 South Jones vs. Taylorsville 10-4
3/23 South Jones vs. Stringer 11-1

+ No. 23 Brandon Bulldogs

#23 Brandon finds themselves back in the Power 25 after 2 week absence. The Bulldogs started the season slow but have figured things out as of late with a 7 game winning streak heading into district play this week versus Petal. Solid pitching was the reason we had them high in the preseason rankings and that pitching is now proving itself. Ole Miss recruit Walker Hooks is always a tough draw and having a solid season at 3-2 with a 2.74 ERA. Hooks, along with Jackson Clark (2-1, 1.62 ERA) and Wade Wilson (2-0, 0.38 ERA) will continue to keep opposing lineups at bay while the offense goes to work. Jay McQueen, Xavier Myles, Jacob Chancellor, and Hooks have been leading the charge at the plate as all are in double figures in runs batted in. Brayson Hall has been solid as well with a .405 average through the 17 games. The Bulldogs will look to continue their winnings ways as 7A looks to be very competitive down the stretch.

DATE TEAM SCORE
3/19 Brandon vs. Meridian 17-0
3/19 Brandon vs. Meridian 15-0
