RENO, NV – On Thursday, the Damonte Ranch Mustangs visited the division leading Reno Huskies.  The Mustangs have scuffled a little bit throughout division play, but they looked like a playoff contender today.  They jumped on Huskies starter ’19 John Barry (LHP) out of the gate for three runs in the top of the first. Reno reliever, ’20 Skylar Hales (RHP), would come on, in place of Barry and settle things down. Reno answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Mustangs would extend their lead in the fifth with a 2-run homer off the bat of first baseman, Ben Olsen and tack on another insurance run in the sixth for a 6-2 lead.  The Huskies would plate a run in the sixth but that would be the end of it. Damonte Ranch’s ’20 Everett Williams (RHP) and ’20 Carson Smith (RHP)  would combine to throw the final two innings to preserve the victory.  The real story was sophomore Mathew Sigafoos. Sigafoos threw 5.1 innings surrendering three runs. The sophomore made big pitches when he had to, relying heavily on his breaking ball in big situations and pitching consistently down in the zone on a breezy day at Zunini Field.  Reno continues to lead division play (13-2) and the Mustangs improve to (8-7). In other 4A action, Bishop Manogue (9-6) downed Spanish Springs (11-4), Galena (12-3) defeated Reed (8-7), Douglas (4-11) held on to top McQueen (6-9), and Carson (4-11) beat Wooster (0-15). 

’21 Mathew Sigafoos, RHP (Damonte Ranch)

Lean, 6-foot 150, Sigafoos is a projectable right-handed pitcher with room for weight and strength gains.  He pitched with a fastball that ranged 79-83, sitting comfortably 82-83. The sophomore relied heavily on a sweeping breaking ball that came in 69-73. He showed tremendous confidence in this secondary pitch, throwing it in any count. He was competitive and composed in what felt like playoff atmosphere.
