Organization Spotlight: Southern Nevada Baseball

CHRIS SHEFF, SOUTHERN NEVADA EARNs BERTH

Another Nevada organization has qualified for the Senior Fall Classic, a tournament that has attracted hundreds of college and professional scouts in recent year to get a look at the top talent in the west region. Southern Nevada Baseball took a talented squad down Arizona, hit .370 as a team and took home the championship of the Universal Classic, earning them an automatic bid for the exclusive Senior Fall Classic in Arizona. This berth will provide another opportunity for prospects from Nevada to attend the event that has a great attendance and follow from every level of college baseball all the way to MLB crosscheckers.

Chris Sheff, owner of Southern Nevada Baseball, has built a program with over 70 college commits in their brief history. Also known for his time at Bishop Gorman, Sheff (along with Basic’s Scott Baker) built up a program that brought home a state record seven consecutive NIAA State Championships and two National Championships back to our state. He helped us breakdown the top performers at the event that help carry SN on their championship run. 

Sheff's teams are know for their ability to slug with the best of them and this team was no different, getting major contribution from members of the '21, '22 and '23 graduation classes. Hunter Katschke, 2021 OF/RHP, from Basic Academy lead the team in hitting throughout the event with three doubles and four triples.  Southern Nevada also had strong performances by 2023 prospect Cooper Sheff, 2B/RHP from Basic Academy, who hit over .500 for the event and 2022 grad Chris Acosta, 2B/OF/RHP from Basic Academy, who tacked on two triples of his own.

Player News

On the mound, Southern Nevada earned a 1.63 team ERA led by 2022 RHP Gavin Stephenson, Basic Academy, who struck out seven batters in seven innings of work including both a save and a win on Championship Day. SN was also carried through the tournament by the arms of 2021 graduate Hunter Mark, LHP from Bishop Gorman, struck out five batters, allowing one run in 5.2 innings of work and 2022 RHP/3B Chase Ditmar, Basic Academy, also struck out five, allowing two runs over his 4.2 innings of work. The pitching staff was loaded with uncommitted prospects who showed very well at the event and help lead SN to a championship at the Senior Fall Class qualifier.

Scouting Report

2/10/19 - Youthful, 5-foot-11, 180, He pitched from an all stretch delivery with a fastball in the low 70s. He took almost 20 mph off to throw his curveball while the velocity of his changeup maintained a solid 10 mph differential.  Mark has a methodical delivery with the tempo and arm speed to match.  He flashed spin on the breaking ball but wrist play, pre-grip, and hand speed effect its velocity.  This is a young man still developing and there is strength in his lower half to draw on.  He had solid zone feel with 3 pitches, throwing consistent strikes.
