Carlyle 7, Columbia 3

Carlyle (10-2; 1-0) rolled in their Cahokia Conference opener on Tuesday. Senior Cody Huels (2-1) allowed one earned run in his solid six innings of work on the mound to pick up the win. Huels fanned seven Eagle hitters. Juniors Matt Hilmes and Logan Zachry led the Indian attack. Hilmes was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle and drove in three Indian runs. Zachry had three hits and plated a pair for Carlyle. Senior C Kyle Jackson added two hits and two RBI. Columbia (7-2; 0-1) was led by senior Evan Dake, who had two hits and two RBI to lead the Eagles.

Red Bud 4, Breese Central 2
Red Bud (8-1; 1-0) scored three first innings run and went on to defeat Breese Central in a Cahokia Conference opener on Tuesday. Senior Colin Wiegard had two hits and had three RBI to lead the Musketeers. Senior Kenny Wilson (3-0) fired a seven hitter at Breese, striking out seven. The two Breese Central (4-2; 0-1) runs were unearned.

Central State 8

Chatham Glenwood 7, Jacksonville 3
Chatham Glenwood (5-0, 1-0) won its CS8 opener on Tuesday. The Titans hit Jacksonville (6-3; 3-2) with a five-run second inning to put this one away early. Junior standout Brian Hobbie and senior Drake Hupp, each had two-run singles in the five-run Titan second. Hobbie finished with three RBI. 

Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 2, Lincoln 1
SHG (5-1; 2-1) won a thriller in Springfield on Tuesday. All the runs were scored in the first two innings of this pitcher’s duel between SHG’s junior RHP Connor Etheridge and Lincoln’s RHP Ryan Sloan. Cyclone sophomore 2B Cole Daily and junior Steve Sartore singled home the two Cyclone runs. Senior 1B David Jacob was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Etheridge went five innings and allowed a run to pick up the win. Cyclone closer Connor Creasy, mowed down the Railsplitters in the sixth and seventh to nail down the save for Etheridge. Lincoln’s (7-3; 1-1) Sloan was the tough-luck loser that went the distance allowing two runs and seven hits.

Cornbelt

Normal U-High 12, Stanford Olympia 2
The defending Class 2A State Champs from U-High, hammered Stanford Olympia 12-2 in six innings, in the Pioneers’ Cornbelt Conference opener. Tim McGowan led Normal U-High (3-2; 1-0) with two hits and four RBI. Kyle Ummel chipped in with two hits. Pioneer RHP Dylan Farney fired a four-hitter at Olympia, allowing one earned run.

Metro Suburban

Glenbard South 11, Fenton 0
The defending Metro Conference champs rolled to an 11-0 romp of Fenton in five innings. Glenbard South’s senior RHP Ethan Gasbarro fired a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts at the Bison. Glenbard South (3-1; 1-0) was led by Nick Yangas who tripled and drove in three Raider runs. Will Cornwell chipped in with a single and two

North Suburban Lake

No. 5 Mundelein 10, Lake Forest 0

Warren 8, Lake Zurich 2
Warren (4-2; 1-0) blasted Lake Zurich 8-2 in the Blue Devils NSC-Lake opener. The Blue Devils were led by Nick Orslini, who homered, doubled and drove home three. Elliot McElroy chipped in with a two-run single for Warren. Adam Reuss allowed no earned runs and three hits to pick up the win on the mound for Warren. Lake Zurich’s (1-5) starting and losing pitcher Austin Foote (0-1), allowed two runs and three hits, while striking out 14 in his 5 2/3 innings of work.

North Suburban Prairie

Grant 32, North Chicago 3

Grant (2-1; 1-0) destroyed North Chicago 32-3 in five innings in the Bulldogs NSC-Prairie opener. Bulldog junior C Simeon Lucas drove home eight runs, with a three-run bomb, a three-run triple and a two-run double. Doug Murphey (1-0) fired three no-hit innings with six strikeouts to get the win.

S. Illinois River-River Mississippi

DuQuoin 5, Sparta 2
DuQuoin (6-1; 1-1) defeated Sparta behind a six-hitter from senior RHP Brenden Fred. Fred (2-0) struck out six and allowed only one earned run. Indian senior C Travis Chapman had three hits, including a double and drove home three to lead the DuQuoin attack. Senior 2B Nate Boss chipped in with two hits and two RBI.

S. Illinois River-River-Ohio

Herrin 10, West Frankfort 7
Herrin (8-4; 2-0) outslugged West Frankfort in Herrin on Tuesday. Tiger junior C Zeke Fiorni led the Herrin attack with two hits and four RBI. Sophomore 1B Jared Daugerty was 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Tigers.

Massac County 5, No. 22 Harrisburg 2

At the home of Superman, Massac County’s Jacob Cox would have made “The Man of Steel” proud, when he crushed a three-run walk-off bomb to stun 22nd-ranked Harrisburg in Metropolis on Tuesday. Harrisburg (8-2; 1-1) was led by sophomore Cooper Thompson had a perfect 3-for-3 day for the Bulldogs. University of Illinois-bound Ryne Roper continued his red-hot hitting with two more hits.

Benton 6, Murphysboro 1

Benton (7-5; 1-1) rolled past Murphysboro 6-1 at Murphysboro on Tuesday. Ranger junior RHP Tyler Owens (2-1) fired a six-hitter at the Red Devils with eight strikeouts. Junior Nathan Higgins singled, doubled and drove home two for the Rangers. Sophomore Dakota Head doubled home a pair for Benton. Senior Zack Mocaby chipped in with a single and RBI.

South Seven

Mount Vernon 6, Marion 0
Mount Vernon (9-4; 2-0) ace Brock Fulkerson (3-1), was outstanding in the Rams South Seven Conference battle with Marion on Tuesday. Fulkerson fired a six-hit shutout at Marion with eight strikeouts. Fulkerson lowered his ERA to 1.66. Junior Jake Pike hit a three-run bomb and drove home four runs for the Rams. Senior Landon Thomas chipped in with two hits and scored a run.

South Suburban Blue

Lemont (2-1; 1-0) opened up defense of their SSC-Blue championship with a 10-0 whitewash of TF South in five innings. Indian LHP Cody Caballerro fired a five-inning no-hitter at the Rebels with five strikeouts. Indian 2B Mike Wisz, tripled twice and drove in four runs to lead the Lemont attack. Alex Broskovetz was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. 

South Suburban Red

Oak Lawn 8, Richards 5

Oak Lawn (2-3; 2-0) swept away arch-rival Richards behind the big bat of Martin Krzysiak. Krzysiak singled, doubled and drove home three Spartan runs. Mitch Swatec chipped in with a single and an RBI for OLCHS. Richards (3-6; 0-2) was led by Harley Miller who had a two-run single for the Bulldogs.

Evergreen Park 9, Argo 1
Evergreen Park (2-2; 2-0) completed its sweep of Argo in the opening SSC-Red series for both clubs. Dan Duh doubled and drove home three Mustang runs. Brendan Walsh and three hits and drove home two, while KeyShawn Carpenter singled and tripled and had two RBI. Mustang LHP David Kutschke (1-0), allowed one run and three hits in six innings to pick up the win. 

Southwest Prairie

Minooka 14, Plainfield Central 7
Minooka (3-2; 1-0) opened up SWPC play, outslugging Plainfield Central 14-7 on Tuesday. Indian senior Joe Carnagio and Steve Wittkamp went deep for Minooka. Carnagio drove home three and Wittkamp two to lead the Indian attack. Chris Costa also drove home three for Minooka.

Plainfield South 10, Plainfield East 0 
Plainfield South (2-2; 1-0) whitewashed Plainfield East behind a four-hitter from Cougar starting pitcher Enrique Perez. Cougar senior Victor Garcia took care of the Cougar offense. Garcia was 3-for-3 with a single, double and homer. Garcia drove in half the Cougar runs. Tyler Butler chipped in with a pair of RBI for South.

Southwestern

Collinsville 4, No.11 Alton 3
Collinsville (6-0; 1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and hung on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over the 11th-ranked Redbirds at Fletcher Field in Collinsville. Kahok junior starting pitcher Tanner Houck improved to 2-0 on the season and junior closer Zach Mathes fired two hitless innings to nail down his third save of 2013. Alton (7-1; 0-1) was led by Indiana-bound Brent Gibbs who doubled home a Redbird run and junior Matt Hopkins who had an RBI single.

O’ Fallon 5, Granite City 3
O’Fallon (7-4; 2-0) received a two-run bomb from junior Jeff Hahs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Warriors at Blazier Field. Senior C Brendan Tindall had a single and an RBI. His battery mate junior Blake Deatherage improved to 3-0 with the win. Fellow junior Ty Herbert fired three hitless innings in relief to nail down his second save of the season. Granite City (3-5; 0-2) was led by Warrior Jake Daily who had a two-run double.

Belleville West 24, East St. Louis 2
Belleville West (8-2; 1-0) crushed the Flyers in a game mercifully concluded after four innings. Senior Nick VanOsdale singled, doubled and drove home three Maroon runs.

Senior Chris Bernosky, junior Ethan Lewis, senior Aaron Meyer and junior John Dozier all had two RBI for West. Senior Zach Rhein (1-0) fired a four-hitter to pick up the win. 

Belleville East 6, Edwardsville 5

Belleville East (3-2; 1-1) rallied past Edwardsville in Belleville on Tuesday. After Edwardsville (4-3; 0-2) had erased a 4-0 Lancer lead, with four in the sixth and one in the seventh, the Lancers rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh to win this thriller. Lancer senior Anthony Garza had a perfect 2-for-2 day with a double and three RBI. Junior Dean Gerros had a single and an RBI and senior Marty Brunk (1-0) doubled home a run and picked up the win in relief.

Suburban Christian Blue

Montini 6, Marian Central Catholic 0

St. Francis 15, Aurora Christian 12
In a SCC-Blue contest St. Francis (3-3; 1-1) outslugged Aurora Christian 15-12. St. Francis jumped out to a 9-1 lead after four. Aurora Christian (2-2; 1-1) struck for six runs in the top of the fifth only to have the Spartans match the Eagles with a six-spot of their own. St. Francis senior Joshua Croci had quite a day to lead the Spartans. Croci, had four singles and a double for a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate. He scored three runs and drove home three more. Sophomore Tarshma Jackson, fell a homer short of hitting for the cycle with four RBI. Junior Tristan Withrow had three hits, including two doubles and four RBI to lead the Eagles Junior Brad Walgren had four hits for the Eagles and scored three runs.

Suburban Christian Gold

Aurora Central Catholic 12, Guerin Prep 0
Aurora Central Catholic (3-1; 2-0) crushed Guerin Prep behind a one-hitter from Charger hurler Matt Rahn (1-0). Rahn also had a big triple at the plate. Heartland Community College-bound Matt Miller had three hits to lead the Charger onslaught. Phil Schuetz chipped in with a pair of hits.

Upstate 8 Crossovers

Neuqua Valley 5, Geneva 2
Neuqua Valley (5-2; 1-0) scored five times in the first inning against Geneva’s University of Miami-bound RHP Andy Honiotes (1-1). Honiotes allowed two hits and four walks in the inning allowing a pair earned runs. Honiotes, along with reliever Chenier would no-hit the Wildcats the rest of the game. Honiotes pitched five innings, allowing the two earned runs and two hits while striking out six and walking six. Wildcat starting pitcher Danny Mokrzycki, allowed four hits and an unearned run in his four innings of work to pick up the win. RHP Jonathan Vik pitched three innings of relief to nail down the save.

Nonconference

No. 1 Lincoln-Way North 10, Joliet Central 0
Lincoln-Way North (4-0) smashed Joliet Central in five innings, in a Southwest Suburban Conference crossover. Oakton Community College-bound CF Corey Krupske and senior Tyler Gaynor each had two RBI for the Phoenix. Junior LHP Matt Strzelczk (1-0) fired a two-hit shutout at the Steelmen with five strikeouts.

No. 2 St. Rita 10, Ashley Ridge (SC) 1
St. Rita (11-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season on Monday to roll past its Magnolia State Ashley Ridge. Austin Peay-recruit junior LHP Mike Constanzo improved to 4-0 on the mound and Mustang senior 2B Andy Massey had three hits and drove home four Mustang runs.

No. 3 Providence 5, No. 9 Naperville Central 1
At Tom Dedin Field, Providence (5-1) defeated Naperville Central 5-1 in this battle of Top 10 state-ranked schools. Celtic junior Phil Kunsa had three hits, including two doubles and drove home two Celtic runs. Evansville-bound Devin Williams had a single and an RBI for Providence. Celtic senior RHP Yianni Pavlopoulos (2-0) fired four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and he struck out three to get the win. Notre Dame-recruit junior RHP Jake Godfrey entered the game in the top of the seventh. Godfrey ended the game with a flourish blowing away the final Redhawk hitter to nail down the save for Pavlopoulos. Naperville Central (3-2) senior 1B Jeff Schank led the Redhawks with two hits and an RBI.

No. 4 St. Laurence 10, St, Francis (FL) 0
St. Laurence (6-1) rolled in the Sunshine State on Tuesday. Senior RHP Kyle Estand fired a three-hit shutout with seven punch-outs against the Floridians. Senior 3B Zach Lewis had a 2-for-2 day with a triple and an RBI. Purdue-recruit junior Brad Wood added two hits and two RBI.

No.6 Sandburg 7, Thornwood 0
Indiana-bound SS Austin Cangelosi hit a two run homer and a double to lead the Eagles to victory. The Eagles once again threw up a shutout, this time allowing only two hits. Sophomore Alec Martinez got his first win in relief.

No. 7 Mount Carmel 15, Scott (KY)
Mount Carmel (7-1) crushed the Kentuckians in six innings in the Blue Grass State on Tuesday. Junior LHP Austin Dodson (2-0) fired allowed one hit with 10 strikeouts. The two Scott runs were unearned.The Caravan’s sophomore Ako Thomas drove home three to lead the MC attack. Oregon-bound SS Jerry Houston and senior Jason Gasser each plated a pair of runs. Senior Joe Kennedy had two hits and an RBI. Kennedy also pitched a scoreless sixth in relief of Dodson.

Fremd 17, No. 13 Prairie Ridge 7
Fremd (4-1) had only eight hits but scored 17 runs to stun No. 13 Prairie Ridge on Tuesday. The Vikings were led by Alex Dompke who had three hits, including a double, scored three runs and had three RBI. Viking Andrew Stark added two hits, scored three runs and drove home two. Prairie Ridge (3-1) was led by Missouri-bound Jordan Getzelman, who hit a two-run bomb for the Wolves.

No.23 Simeon 14, Lincoln Park 0
Simeon (4-2) blew out Lincoln Park on Tuesday in five innings. Wolverine junior Darius Day and sophomore Terrance Robertson, each hammered two-run bombs for Simeon.

Day finished with three hits and Robertson two. Louisville-bound CF Corey Ray had a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate. Simeon staring and winning pitcher Raheem Thomas improved to 2-0 with a shutout performance.

No. 24 Lockport 5, Bradley Bourbonnais 0

Normal West 11, Springfield 5
Normal West (7-3) outslugged Springfield in Springfield on Tuesday. Wildcat junior Ryan Frye had three hits, including his first round-tripper of 2013, scored three runs and had three RBI in his perfect day at the plate. Missouri State-bound Alex Jefferson added three hits, including a double and had two RBI. Senior RHP Nick Hieb (3-0) allowed one run and three hits in his fine five-inning outing to pick up the win.

Jacobs 12, Conant 6
The Golden Eagles improved to 4-0 with a 12-6 nonconference victory over Conant. Aaron Mejiej led the Jacobs attack with two hits and three RBI. Matt Hickey doubled home a pair of runs and Connor Conzelman chipped in with two hits. Golden Eagle RHP Ryan Sargent picked up the win allowing one run and two hits in his five quality innings on the mound.   

Herscher 7, Beecher 0
Herscher (5-0-1) blanked Beecher behind a four-hit shutout by Minooka senior RHP Austin Mendell (2-0). Mendell fanned seven. Tiger senior C Eric Regez had two hits and two RBI to lead the Herscher attack. 

Lincoln-Way East 10, Andrew 8
In a Southwest Suburban crossover game, Lincoln-Way East (3-1) outslugged Andrew 10-8 on Tuesday. Red-hot Griffin Evan Sandman was on base four times for East. Sandman singled, doubled, walked twice and drove home a pair of Griffin runs. Senior Chad Prieto drove home three Griffin runs and senior C Dan Duffin tripled, singled and scored two runs. Michigan State-bound Dan Durkin hit a three-run homer for Andrew (4-4). Senior C Ryan Supple had three hits, including a double and drove home three T-Bolt runs.

Lincoln-Way Central 16, Stagg 3
Lincoln-Way Central (3-1) scored eight times in the fifth to put an end to this one. Knight junior 1B Sean Barry singled, doubled and plated three. Juniors Kevin Mampe,

Ryan Earil and senior Mac Leske all had two hits and two RBI. Senior Ryan Kahne picked up the win on the mound for the Knights. Stagg falls to 3-5.

Peoria Richwoods 8, Gordon Tech 7
Peoria Richwoods defeated Gordon Tech in frigid Chicago on Tuesday morning. Richwoods’ (1-2) Travis Shoopman had a double and plated three Knight runs. Maceo Lozan had two hits and an RBI for Richwoods. Gordon Tech was led by senior Alan Osinski who doubled twice and had three RBI for the Rams.

St. Viator 13, Hersey 5
In the “Battle of Arlington Heights”, St. Viator (2-2) trounced Hersey 13-5 at Hersey. Lion sophomore Ben Dickey had a pair of singles, scored a run and drove in two more to lead St. Viator. Senior 1B Roy Pettingill chipped in with three hits, including a double. Dallas Baptist-bound RHP Gunner Kay improved to 2-0 0n the mound for St. Viator. Hersey (0-3) was led by senior C J Reichel who had two hits and two RBI for the Huskies.

Carmel 4, Cary-Grove 1
Carmel (3-1) defeated Cary-Grove in Mundelein on Tuesday. Corsair senior Tyler Green led the Carmel attack with two hits and two RBI. Senior 2B Matt Ryan had a perfect 3-for-3 day for the Corsairs and junior C Ian Kristan had a single and two RBI. On the mound, University of Illinois-recruit RHP Quintin Sefcik struck out nine and allowed two hits in his stellar five inning outing. The run Sefcik allowed was unearned.
