Updated Illinois 2017 Rankings Released

After a long high school season, and many regional and national events scouted over the summer months, we have updated and expanded the Illinois 2017 rankings. Illinois’ 2017 class is shaping up to be one of the more interesting group of prospects in recent years. This crop of rising seniors features a number of high-end arms, many of whom found themselves in the updated overall rankings released earlier this week.

Over the course of the last three-plus months, more and more names emerged to the fore, while many prospects have made significant leaps in their games, which made the process that much more difficult.

The previous No. 1 in the 2017 class was Cal Greenfield of St. Rita HS. A few weeks ago Greenfield, a Florida recruit, decided to transfer to Jensen Beach HS in Florida. With Greenfield now in the Florida rankings, there is a new No. 1 in Illinois. After a number of quality outings this spring and a scintillating performance at the PBR ProCase in June, RHP Austin Marozas (Plainfield South HS), takes over the top spot in Illinois. The imposing 6-foot-7, 230-pound, Marozas, a Mississippi State commit, features a loose, quick arm from a ¾ slot and runs his fastball into the low 90’s with heavy arm-side sink. Marozas should be a high-level draft follow in the 2017 class.

Right behind Marozas is Louisville recruit, Glenn Albanese (Batavia HS), another right-handed pitcher with an impressive frame. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound, hulking, right-hander sits comfortably in the upper 80’s and dials it up to 90 mph when needed.

LHP Reid Detmers (Nokomis HS), another Louisville commit, remains in the Top 5, where he has been since he burst onto the scene at the Future Games last year. Fellow LHP and Future Games participant Brendan Murphy (Mundelein HS) catapults into the Top 5 after a big spring. Murphy, an Arizona State commit, earned First Team All-State honors, after holding opposing hitters to a .169 batting average and striking out 109 batters in 69 innings. He also hit .433 with 16 doubles.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Illinois commit Ryan Kutt (Brother Rice HS). Kutt, also earned First Team All-State honors, leading a talented Brother Rice squad to 30 straight games at one point in the season. Kutt, a competitor on the mound, can run his fastball up to 90 mph and mixes in a swing and miss cutter/slider anywhere from 78-83 mph.

RHP Bobby Miller (McHenry HS), a Louisville recruit and stalwart in the Top 10, comes in at No. 6. RHP Brady Corrigan (Plainfield North HS), INF Zion Pettigrew (Mt. Carmel), Joe Donovan (Westmont HS), and Bobby Seymour (Mt. Carmel) round out the Top 10.
