Each and every MLB organization has an overall “draft board” that ranks every prospect, starting at the top and working its way down. This list typically extends to the top-100. However, a deeper look into a War Room will show multiple lists that provide greater insight and allow for more flexibility in stress-filled situations.
Multiple board rankings separated by year in school status (HS / College) and by position (Hitters / Pitchers) provide protection from getting locked into a pick by simply taking the next prospect on an overall Draft Board. When a scouting director looks around his War Room for his next pick he can choose from a variety of pick types; high school hitter, high school pitcher, college hitter, college pitcher. Each pick type comes with a different degree of risk, and signability. Generally, high school pitchers carry the most risk, while college hitters the least.
