Prep Baseball Report

2016 RHP Zach Jackson committed to Arkansas, and 2016 RHP/OF Garry Hill committed to Arkansas State on Tuesday. Both players participated in the Arkansas Top Prospects Games on June 1st and 2nd at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale. Here is my evaluation of both players.

Zach Jackson, RHP, Bryant High School
Jackson is a 6-foot-2 230-pound right hander with a large frame and a large build. He primarily pitches with a two pitch combination of his fastball and slider. The fastball is 85-88 mph with boring action. His slider is thrown at 74-77 mph with late sharp break, which dominated hitters this spring. Jackson works from a H3/4 arm slot, with a quick arm. He repeats his mechanics. He needs to improve the body and continue to recover from Tommy John he had just 7 months ago. Overall he is one of the top arms in the 2016 class and should continue to get better as the body and athleticism improve.

Garry Hill RHP/OF, Star City High School
Hill is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound RHP with an athletic frame and build. He works from a H ¾ arm slot with a quick loose arm. His fastball is 86-88 mph with slight arm side run. He compliments his fastball with an 11/5 curveball with late break and depth. Hill repeats mechanic and has average balance. He would benefit from getting more extension toward home plate. Overall he is a good athlete that projects to get better with his arm action. Defensively as a position player his athleticism takes over making him a solid defender. His arm strength plays well from the outfield. Offensively he attacks the ball with fast bat speed producing exit velocities up to 91 mph. The swing has the tendency to get long, however he has feel for the barrel and has hit consistently at the high school level. Right now Hill projects to be a dual player for the Red wolves, the bat will make the determination if it is a reality.
