GAME RECAP

#14 Basha (2-0) VS #25 Salpointe Catholic (1-2)

Final Score: 4-2 Basha

WP: Carter Boone 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 8 K, 1 BB
Player of the Game: Tyler Clementz 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 QAB

On Feb. 25, PBR Arizona staff was in attendance for the matchup between Basha and Salpointe Catholic at Desert Vista High School. The first half of this ball game was quiet, as the pitching for both sides controlled the pace of the ball game. Basha SP Carter Boone (2023) had his stuff working in this outing, as did his counterpart LHP Max Smith (2022). The score was knotted at 0-0 through 4 innings of this matchup, until the Bear's bats woke up. 2023 INF/RHP Brady Lord drove his second double of the day to left center field, advanced to third after tagging on a F9, then crossed home plate on a gutsy dirt ball read at home plate. 2022 infielder Brady Campbell started the Bears rally in the 5th with a line drive base hit to left field, followed by a Drew Douglas walk, and 2023 Tyler Clementz was able to pick up 2 RBI with his double to left center field. The Lancers had their backs against the wall in the 7th down 4-0, when Basha brought in Brady Lord to close the game out. 2022 Arizona commit Mason White turned in a senior at bat with a lead off line drive single to CF, followed by an Omar Monreal base on balls, and they both advanced on a great dirt ball read by Mason White. Colton Raetzman drove in a run with a ground ball to first base, but that was all she wrote for the Lancers late push. Overall, very clean baseball game played on Friday by both sides, the story of this matchup was pitching and timely offense, as the Basha Bears improve their record to 2-0.

Key Take-Aways
  • Basha is balanced
  • Basha strike throwing ability
  • Salpointe's smooth swinging LHH's
  • Both teams will compete

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

Carter Boone 1B / RHP / Basha, AZ / 2023

6-foot-3 185 pounds, Carter Boone turned in a masterpiece of a starting performance during Friday's matchup. He was filling up the zone with strike, changing speeds, hitting his spots, and most importantly did not miss out over the plate. Boone had a FB/CUT/SL mix working, and that was enough to keep the Lancer offense at bay. Boone is a good athlete on the mound with a strong build, not overpowering stuff, but effective.

6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 8 K, 1 BB

Brady Lord SS / 2B / Basha , AZ / 2023

6-foot 175 pounds, although the bats were quiet for the first half of the game, Brady Lord's bat was not. Lord doubled in his first two at bats to left center, as these balls were driven well with true flight splitting the outfielder. Lord has a great build with size and strength, and showed some bat speed and barrel consistency in this game. Brady Lord is in the middle of this Basha lineup to begin the year, and will play a big role in this offenses success through the spring. He will also get some quality innings on the mound, as it seems he may be in a closer role on the staff. With his short arm action and strike throwing ability, Lord is going to be aggressive and attack bats in the late innings of ball games.

2-3 2 2B, 1 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB

Tyler Clementz 3B / 1B / Basha , AZ / 2023

6-foot 175 pounds, Tyler Clementz was in the 3-hole for the Bears on Friday, and his presence was felt. Clementz has grown into a mature and consistent hitter over the past years, and could be an impact bat in Basha's lineup. He turned in 3 quality at bats on Friday, all with hard contact, resulting in 2 hits. Clementz will play on the corners for Basha, with the ability to get back behind the plate. With his 2 RBI double, he got the offense going and put them in a secure spot to record the win.

2-3 2B, 2 RBI

Gunner Geile OF / Salpointe , AZ / 2024

6-foot 180 pounds, recent University of Arizona commit, Gunner Geile did not impact the game on Friday, but his talent and upside can't go unnoticed. Geile is a sophomore hitting in the 2-hole for Salpointe, in front of teammate Arizona commit Mason White. Hitting in front of White, Geile could see plenty of pitches to hit with the fear of White's bat behind him. Geile is a mature hitter for his age, with bat speed and a swing path that can create some loft to the ball. Geile flashed his potential in his 2nd at bat this game, flying out to deep center field, as the center fielder made the catch going back to the wall. He also has an above average arm, Geile nearly threw a runner out tagging up to third on a deep fly ball to right field. Keep an eye out for Geile through this spring season, excited to follow his successes.

Mason White SS / 2B / Salpointe Catholic, AZ / 2022

5-foot-10 180 pounds, University of Arizona commit, Mason White is a smooth fielding SS hitting from the left handed batters box. White has a very loose swing with an inside path to the baseball. White's fielding skills and IQ are advanced, with soft hands and a good arm. He knows when he needs to come get balls, and has a great internal clock. Mason White will be the leader for this Salpointe team this spring offensively and on defense.

1-3 1B
