Recently the PBR staff got a chance to sit down with No. 34 2016 Jared Chick of Roosevelt. 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting MIF, hits from a tall setup with a short stride stride combined with a leg kick, hands move back during load producing 75 mph exit velocity off the tee. Has a good approach at the plate with a level swing producing gap to gap power. Ran an impressive 6.90 60, and was 4.25 from home to first. We have had Jared at a 6.8 60 before. 2016 grad to follow. Kinda of a sleeper in our state coming from small town Johnstown. We look forward to seeing Jared at the 2/22 Preseason All-State Event.

PBR: At what point in your career did you become serious about taking your game to the next level?
Chick: 8^th grade year after my team was runner up at the Legion state tournament and I won offensive MVP

PBR: What are you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Chick: I want to play for a competitive college program that will provide me the opportunity to continue to work hard and get better, and will hopefully allow for me to continue on my dream of playing baseball at the pro level

PBR: What schools do you have interest in?
Chick: Like a lot of young baseball players my dream has always been to play for Arizona State University

PBR: What factors will sway your decision in choosing a college?
Chick: Opportunity to play

PBR: Where if any have you made visits to?
Chick: I have made no official visit’s yet, but have attended the Grand Canyon Prospect camp

PBR: What colleges have you been in contact with?
Chick: I have sent out my recruiting profile to some colleges and a few have responded

PBR: Do you have any timetable as to when you are looking to make your decision?
Chick: Before my senior high school baseball season

 

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?
Chick: I try to get out and take ground balls, throw, and hit in the cage daily as long as the weather in Colorado allows.

My dad put in a batting cage in our basement so I get to use that whenever I want

I also work in the off season at least once a week with a former Div 1 MIF to hone my defensive skills, arm strength, and base running speed

I also start at shooting guard for my varsity high school basketball team, and basketball really helps me get in shape for the baseball season

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Chick: 2^nd in legion state tourney and winning offensive MVP

PBR: How are your academics? GPA? ACT? SAT? Any academic awards?
Chick: 3.75 GPA through my Sophomore year, and currently all A’s this semester of my Junior year

Member of the National Honor Society, and I have lettered academically my 1^st two years of High School

Will be taking the ACT test next semester, and I might take the SAT

PBR: How was your season last year? Team record? Post season awards? Stats?

Chick: This past Summer my team was 26-27

We finished in the top 3 in 2 different leagues

I was the lead-off hitter all summer and hit .470, scored 74 runs, had 34 RBI’s, had 44 SB out of 47 attempts, only struck out 14 times in 203 plate appearances, led team in hits with 78, led team in doubles with 12, led team in triples with 4, and walked 21 times

I had a 26 game hitting streak, and then started a 12 game hitting streak after the 26 game streak ended

PBR: Preview your high school season? How will your team be this year? Expectations?
Chick: We have a really good opportunity to be league champs, and make a push in the state tournament.  We played most teams in our high school league this summer and posted a great record against them.  Erie and Windsor will we great competition as they always have some of the best pitching in the state, but our team is a great hitting team that scores a lot of runs, and we will hopefully continue to be

We have a veteran team and should be solid at all positions.  Our pitching staff is very solid and they always put us in position to win.

We have a great experienced coaching staff that played at the Division 1 level in college
