Brian Wede, Head Coach, MOC-Floyd Valley Dutchman

Wede has been the coach of the Dutchman for the past 2 years. After playing in high school he went to the University of Iowa for 3 years and then to Mount Mercy for a couple of years. During college he was offered an assistant coach job at South O’Brien and the next season was made head coach. He did that for 6 years and then Interviewed for a pitching coach position at Northwestern. He got the job and then when the head coach moved on Wede interviewed and became head coach. Then two years ago he became the head coach of MOC-Floyd Valley.

When talking about success, Wede says winning is the most important part. “Winning is going to be the most important thing for a team. I think guys can be individually successful and maybe not win. I think coaches can maybe be successful and maybe not win, but every team that I look at, I think winning is probably the most important thing. Success in my opinion team-wise, has a lot to do with winning.”

Describing the culture of his team Wede says, “We have a hard working culture that wants to get work done. Taking care of business when we're at practice, it's not a goof around time. We want to have fun, but we want to be able to get work done. And so there's an intensity around our team, uh, especially in practice settings. I would say the culture is guys that love each other that work hard and care a lot about basics.”

Looking at this season, Wede is looking forward to the younger guys stepping up. “I'm really just looking forward to getting back on the field with the guys. You know, last year we started six sophomores. I'm with those guys and see how they've improved. We'll have a new challenge in front of us. We graduated some really key players for us. Although we were young last year, the seniors that we had had big roles. So to see those roles filled in or those roles get changed with our younger guys, I'm really excited to see,” he says.

Preparing has been doing a couple things to get ready for the season. “We've been throwing with the guys doing bullpens. We have a few nights that we do some hitting workouts as well. The state opened up and allowed us to get with our guys a little bit more. So trying to do that as well, to get ready for the season. We also have some guys that are doing some spring baseball.”

“Deciding between JV and varsity. And then beyond that travel roster, notch, our roster, those decisions are really difficult. Where you're making the decision, the players are so close. And as a coach, you see how much that means to the guys, how much they work for it. You know what being a baseball player means to them. It's heartbreaking to make those decisions, knowing that you're gonna, you're gonna hurt somebody.”

Wede has had a great amount of success with the MOC-Floyd Valley team and this year will be no exception. Him and the Dutchman are looking forward to playing a great season of baseball.
