Prep Baseball Report Kansas

As we prepare for the upcoming 2015 high school season, we will be taking a preseason glimpse at programs from around the state.

Team: Maize South
Nickname: Mavericks
Class: 5A
League: AVCTL-II
Head Coach: Chad Christensen
Years as Head Coach at School: 6
2014 Overall Record: 8-13
2014 League Record: 4-7
2014 Post-Season Finish: Regional runner-up

Returning Starters: 9
Pitchers with 15+ Innings Returning: 4

TOP RETURNERS (College Commitment)
Jordan Maxson, C/OF/RHP, 2017, 2nd Team All-AVCTL-II
Drake Bliss, SS, 2015, 1st Team All-AVCTL-II (Barton County CC)
Kale Bulloch, 3B, 2015, Honorable Mention All-AVCTL-II
Nathan McBroom, RHP, 2015 (Pratt CC)

X-FACTOR
Jordan Maxson. Coach Christensen looks for the physical 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting Maxson to anchor down the three or four-hole in the line-up after an all-league performance his freshman season.

NEWCOMER TO WATCH
Bryce Sell, RHP, 2017. The projectable right-hander missed last season due to an injury but returns to 100% and should be one of the Mavericks top starters on the mound.

KEY STAT
9 and 4.
Maize South returns nine players from their everyday and four pitchers with significant innings from last season giving them one of the most experienced teams in 5A.

2015 OUTLOOK:
The Mavericks look to rebound from an 8-13 season a year ago with a team loaded with experience. Speedy senior SS Drake Bliss returns after a first team all-league performance a year ago. Sophomore OF/C/RHP Jordan Maxson, also an all-league honoree last year, returns and is likely to hit in the middle of the line-up. Expectations are high for sophomore right-hander Bryce Sell after an injury derailed his season a year ago. Bliss is part of a deep group of experienced seniors that South will look to for production this spring including 3B Kale Bulloch (all-league in2014), OF Johnathan Heppler, C/1B Anthony Johnson, RHP/OF Logan Mormando, C Tyler Richards, 2B Caleb Warner as well as Pratt CC signee RHP Nathan McBroom, who broke the school record for strikeouts in a single season last spring. In addition, athletic sophomore RHP/OF Brett Parke will see an expanded role this year and junior LHP/OF Seth Davis gives the Mavericks a left-handed bat option in an otherwise right-hand dominant line-up as well as innings on the mound.
