Kansas Summer Open: Infielders Edition

Prep Baseball Report Kansas hosted the Kansas Summer Open on July 20th at Wichita State University with players coming from the 2022 class through the 2025 class.  53 players from across the state of Kansas as well as players coming in from Missouri, Oklahoma, and as far as California attended the event going through a pro-style workout.  You can click on any of the names to access the player's personal profile.  Today we take a look into each infielder's player analysis going over their body profile, swing mechanics, defensive actions, and more.

The event saw four players with laser timed 60's coming in under 7 seconds.  Connor Earleywine had the top 60 time at the event at a blazing 6.56 seconds.  Brady Unrein posted an impressive 6.76 60 as a 2024 grad with Jackson Cross crossing the line at 6.88 seconds and Jaron Brown coming in at 6.91 seconds.

The top arm strength across the diamond came from Braden Horn at 87 mph.  Jackson Cross came in right behind him at 85 mph with a loose arm action and good hand speed.  Adam Johnson showcased an 83 mph arm across the diamond with Andrew Roth posting an 82 mph reading.  

Two players led the way for the infielders with an 89 mph exit velocity off the tee coming from Braden Horn and Drew Wardell.  Kale Conway showed some hand strength at 87 mph exit velocity with Whit Rhodes right behind him at 86 mph.  Conway saw a big jump in his exit velocity during the BP session with an impressive 95 mph exit velocity.  Connor Earleywine was another big riser in exit velocity during the BP session raising his exit velocity to 93 mph from the left side.

Brayden Alexander 1B / C / Blue Valley, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/C

Body: 6-foot-1, 200-pound mature frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Hands get set quietly and quickly into position with a vertical bat angle.  Quick rock into the lower half with a short stride and into a firm front leg.  Rotational bat path with the hands with a top hand strong finish.  Slightly stiff action in the lower half.  Level bat path and slight lean back with the weight at contact point.

Power: 82 mph exit velocity off the tee and 87 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-63 mph.  C-63 mph.  Pop Times: 2.43-2.59.  High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball with a firm glove and developing glove action.  Behind the plate gets feet and shoulders turned in sync on throws to second.  Developing receiving skills and shows proper blocking technique with good posture.

Run: 8.27 runner in the 60.

Hayes Allen RHP / 1B / Bishop Carroll, KS / 2025

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 185-pound physical and projectable frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture in the upper body.  Back foot is pre-turned inward.  Short leg kick stride with weight rocking quickly into the back leg.  Longer stride with a rotational path with the lower body.  Hands get set below the shoulders with a vertical bat angle.  Works the hands to the inside part of the ball and has a middle of the field approach.  Developing bat speed and balance.

Power: 82 mph exit velocity off the tee and 90 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-70 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball with a sure glove and developing glove action.  Feet and shoulders turn in unison on throws to second with proper footwork around the bag.

Run: 8.18 runner in the 60.

Kaden Bethel 1B / RHP / Goddard, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B

Body: 6-foot-6, 230-pound large and mature frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and very wide base.  No stride technique with 50/50 weight distribution between the feet at contact.  Hands get set quickly into position with a high back elbow and vertical bat angle.  Rotational path with the hands but works the hands inside the ball well.  Middle of the field approach and level bat path.  Hits with good leverage.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity off the tee and 88 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph.  ¾ arm slot with whippy arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with a sure glove and developing glove action.  Gets hps and feet turned quickly on throws to second with proper footwork around the bag. 

Run: 8.64 runner in the 60.

Jaron Brown SS / OF / McPherson, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: MIF/OF

Body: 6-foot, 177-pound athletic frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Short weight stack into the back side and has a very short stride.  Hands get set quietly and quickly into position with a vertical bat angle.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Short and compact swing with developing extension.  Shows the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Hands work quickly through the zone with strong rotational acceleration metrics.

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 88 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-79 mph.  OF-82 mph.  ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter steps.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with a soft glove and some glove action.  Fields the slow roller with two hands inside the glove side leg.  In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with good glove action.  Shuffle crow hop technique with slight momentum headed towards target.

Run: 6.91 runner in the 60.

Boston Bruce 2B / C / Atchison, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: MIF/C

Body: 5-foot-7, 143-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.  

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and athletic posture.  Hands get set away from the body with a bent front arm.  Bat angle gets set in a tipped position with rhythmic waggle.  Leg kick stride with strong weight stack into a bent back leg.  Good linear direction with the lower half working into a firm front leg.  Does a good job of manipulating the lower half to get on plane with pitches up and down in the zone.  Takes good routes to the ball with the hands.  Good balance throughout the swing.

Power: 79 mph exit velocity off the tee and 83 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph.  C-66 mph.  Pop Times: 2.02-2.10. High ¾ arm slot with a clean and whippy arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with active feet and a feel for routes working around the ball.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with good glove action and soft hands.  Clean exchanges out of the glove.  Fields the slow roller with two hands inside the glove side leg.  Behind the plate works quickly out of the crouch with active feet and quick shoulder turn.  Throws had good accuracy with developing carry.   Shows a developing feel for receiving and solid blocking technique.

Run: 7.55 runner in the 60.

Kale Conway C / 3B / Kearney , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/3B

Body: 6-foot-1, 225-pound physical and mature frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and wide base with an athletic posture.  Quick rock in the weight into the back leg and utilizes a quick stride to a wider base.  Hands get set close to the body and tight to the ear with a 45 degree bat angle.  Rotational bat path with a strong top hand finish.  Slight uphill bat path and works the ball up in the air.  Hands work quickly through the zone with good overall bat speed.  Shows strong rotational acceleration metrics.

Power: 87 mph exit velocity off the tee and 95 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-73 mph.  C-69 mph.  Pop Times:2.16-2.26.  High ¾ arm slot with a short and clean arm slot

Defense: Behind the plate receives the ball with one knee in the dirt and a feel for pitch framing.  Kicks the feet and hips back quickly on blocks with good posture.  Clean and quick exchanges out of the glove on throws to second with good carry and accuracy to the bag.  In the infield attacks the ball with lateral routes to the ball and short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball deep into the body with a firm glove and developing glove action.

Run: 7.71 runner in the 60.

Jackson Cross RHP / 3B / Russell, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: 3B/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 160-pound lean and athletic build with present strength and athleticism.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Leg gather stride working to a wider base.  Slight weight rock into the backside with a short linear weight transfer into a slightly bent front leg.  Hands work deep and back with a rotational path around the ball.  Hits the ball with good leverage and shows some strength at contact.  Developing balance throughout the swing.  Hands work quickly through the zone.

Power: 79 mph exit velocity off the tee and 90 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-85 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with direct routes to the ball and short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball deep into the body with a high waist bend and developing glove action.  Fields the ball on the run well with clean exchanges out of the glove.

Connor Earleywine 2B / OF / Jefferson City, MO / 2022

Positional Profile: MIF

Body: 5-foot-8, 160-pound athletic build with room for added strength in the future.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and narrow base with an athletic posture.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg and utilizes a high leg kick stride with good rhythm.  Hands get set into position at the top of the leg kick with a vertical bat angle.  Lands with 50/50 weight distribution between the feet at contact with good balance.  Back shoulder replace rotation with good routes to the ball.  Strong rotational acceleration metrics with good overall bat speed.  Shows good strength at contact.

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 93 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-79 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a short arm action and release.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with direct routes and short and active footwork.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with soft hands and good glove action.  Has good lateral range and shows clean exchanges out of the glove.

Nolan Fevurly RHP / 1B / Mulvane, KS / 2025

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 185-pound stocky build with strength in the lower half.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and upright posture.  Hands get set below shoulder height with a vertical bat angle.  Big leck kick stride with weight rocking into a firm back leg.  Very linear path with the lower half working into a firm front leg.  Level bat path and makes contact out in front of the plate.  Pull side approach with some strength in the hands.  Developing bat speed and balance throughout the swing.

Power: 82 mph exit velocity off the tee and 86 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph. High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with direct routes and short steps.  Fields the ball deep into the body with a high waist bend and developing glove action and firm glove.  Clean exchanges out of the glove.

Dylan Foster 3B / OF / Hayden , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: 3B

Body: 5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic and proportional build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Slow load with the hands and into the lower half.  Slight drift forward into a firm front leg.  Hands stay quietly into position with a 45 degree bat angle.  Short and compact routes to the ball with a level bat path and line drive approach.  Hands work quickly through the zone.  Barrel gets into the zone early and stays in line through contact.

Power: 71 mph exit velocity off the tee and 86 mph exit velocity in BP.  

Arm: RH.  INF-76 mph. High ¾ arm slot with a short a whippy arm action.

Braden Horn C / 1B / Derby, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: C/1B

Body: 6-foot-3, 215-pound physical and mature frame with present strength.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and wide base.  Hands get set quickly into position with a vertical bat angle.  Short rock of the weight into the back leg and utilizes a quick and short stride back to neutral.  Shows some strength at contact with the hands.  Has good overall bat speed and quick hands through the zone.  Slight uphill bat path with good extension.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.

Power: 89 mph exit velocity off the tee and 93 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-87 mph.  C-67 mph.  Pop Times: 1.91-2.00.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with lateral footwork and short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with soft hands and developing glove action.  Behind the plate shows clean and quick exchanges out of the glove with the throws having good carry.  Receives the ball with strong wrists and a feel for pitch framing.  Has adequate blocking technique with good posture.

Corbin Jamison SS / C / Holton, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: MIF/C/RHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 150-pound long and lean build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Quick and short weight shift into the back leg utilizing a short stride back to neutral.  Vertical bat angle with a rotational bat path and strong top hand finish.  Slight uphill bat path and tries to work the ball up in the air.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Barrel gets into the zone quickly and stays through the zone through the contact point.

Power: 78 mph exit velocity off the tee and 85 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph.  C-61 mph.  Pop Times: 2.26-2.47.  High ¾ arm slot with a short and stiff arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with direct routes to the ball with short and choppy footwork.  Fields the ball deep into the body with a stiff glove and developing glove action.  Behind the plate stands straight up out of the crouch on throws to second with throws having developing carry and accuracy to the bag.  Receives the ball with a heavy weight shift onto the glove side leg.  Blocks the ball with one knee in the dirt technique.

Adam Johnson C / 3B / Washburn Rural , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: C/3B

Body: 5-foot-11, 166-pound

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Hands get set quietly into position with a flat bat angle.  Rhythmic and slow two tap stride with the lower half and strong weight stack onto the back leg.  Linear push off the back foot into a firm front leg.  Quick twitch swing with the body sequencing well in rhythm.  Shows some strength at contact.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Does a good job of working the middle of the field.  Maintains balance throughout the swing. 

Power: 84 mph exit velocity off the tee and 89 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-83 mph.  C-73 mph.  Pop Times: 1.91-2.02. High ¾ arm slot with a short and quick arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and direct routes.  Prefers to let the ball come to him.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with soft hands and a feel for glove action.  Solid slow roller technique with clean exchanges out of the glove.  Behind the plate showed quick feet and hips coming out of the crouch.  Throws had developing accuracy and carry.  Shows  feel for pitch framing with strong wrists.  Gets very wide with the lower half on blocks with good posture.

Isaac Lager 1B / RHP / Bishop Carroll, KS / 2025

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 5-foot-11, 150-pound lean and athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a wide base and upright posture in the upper body.  Very short weight shift into the back leg with a pick and put down stride staying in the wider base.  Hands are very active throughout the swing and shows a rotational path with the hands and a top hand strong finish.  Plays the ball deeper into the zone and hits with good leverage.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Barrel gets into the zone early in the swing and stays in the zone through contact point.

Power: 72 mph exit velocity off the tee and 86 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-72 mph.  ¾ arm slot with a loose and whippy arm action.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and athletic posture.  Hands get set quietly into position with a 45 degree bat angle.  Short and simple stride with a quick weight shift into the back leg.  Short linear direction with the lower half working into a firm front leg.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Works the hands to the inside part of the ball and shows the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.  Hands work quickly through the zone.

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 85 mph exit velocity in BP.

Ryan Pierce SS / 2B / Derby , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: MIF

Body: 5-foot-4, 140-pound lean and developing build.

Hit: SWITCH.  At the plate from the right side starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Quick rock of the weight into a the backs side and a linear direction into a firm front leg.  Short and compact swing with a line drive approach and good balance.  From the left side has a similar set up to the right with a touch more rhythm.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch and takes good routes to the ball.  Maintains balance throughout the swing from both sides of the plate.  Easy mechanics and repeats well.

Power: 74 mph exit velocity off the tee and 83 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-74 mph. High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with direct routes and prefers to let the ball come to him.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with soft hands and some glove action.  Shows good lateral range with clean exchanges out of the glove.  Fields the slow roller inside the front leg with two hands and quick exchange.

Run: 7.12 runner in the 60.

Damon Redeker SS / SS / Olpe, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: MIF

Body: 6-foot-2, 180-pound projectable and athletic build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Hands get set above the shoulders with a vertical bat angle.  Quick stride into a wide base with short weight stack into the back leg.  Short linear path with the lower half into a firm front leg.  Slightly stiff throughout the swing with short extension.  Head stays behind the ball at contact and works the hands to the inside part of the ball.  Middle of the field approach and line drive bat path.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.

Power: 78 mph exit velocity off the tee and 86 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-79 mph. ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with a feel for working around the ball with solid rhythm and active feet.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with good glove action and soft hands.  Shows good lateral range and quick exchanges.  Good body control.

Gabe Rodriguez SS / RHP / Ulysses, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: MIF/RHP

Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Slow load into the lower half with hands getting set into position early.  Short and compact stroke with the hands and works them hard to the inside part of the ball.  Middle of the field approach with a line drive bat path.  Hands work very quick through the zone.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Very strong rotational acceleration metrics.  Body rotates well in sequence.

Power: 75 mph exit velocity off the tee and 83 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-76 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with aggressive rhythm and shorter steps.  Fields the ball deep into the body with a high waist bend with some glove action and firm glove.  Clean transfers out of the glove.  Fields the slow roller with two hands out in front with quick exchange.

Andrew Roth C / SS / Russell, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: C/MIF

Body: 5-foot-11, 142-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future to the frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Sinks into the back leg with a rocking motion and raises up in the posture as the hands work through the zone.  Traditional stride into a firm front leg.  Flat bat path with a line drive approach.  Shows some strength at contact with strong hands.  Hands work very quickly through the zone.  Barrel gets into the zone early and matches plane very well.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.

Power: 79 mph exit velocity off the tee and 91 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-82 mph.  C-73 mph.  Pop Times: 1.97-2.15.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with active feet and short and choppy steps.  Fields the ball deep into the body with soft hands and developing glove action.  Clean exchanges out of the glove.  Behind the plate shows quick exchanges with clean feet.  Throws had good accuracy to the bag with developing carry.  Receives the ball with hip sway and developing wrists.  Shows solid blocking technique with good posture and absorbs the ball well.

Run: 7.01 runner in the 60.

Dayten Smoot SS / 2B / Washburn Rural , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: MIF

Body: 5-foot-10, 165-pound proportional and athletic build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance with a crouched posture.  Presets weight deep into the lower half with a bent back leg.  Hands get set quietly into position with a flat bat path.  Works the hands hard to the inside part of the ball and has a middle of the field approach with a line drive bat path.  Linear swing working to a firm front side.  Does a good job of maintaining balance throughout the swing.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch.  

Power: 72 mph exit velocity off the tee and 82 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-77 mph. ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with short and choppy footwork.  Prefers to let the ball come to him and pre sets the shoulders and hips to first base.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with developing glove action and a firm glove.  Shows the ability to field the ball on the run with clean exchanges out of the glove and good rhythm.

Run: 7.43 runner in the 60.

Brenden Stanley OF / 3B / Olathe East, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF/3B

Body: 5-foot-10, 155-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Quick rock of the weight into the back side and raises up in the posture with a short leg kick stride.  Hands get set quietly into position with a flat bat angle.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Works the hands hard to the inside part of the ball.  Short extension through the ball.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch and maintains balance throughout the swing.

Positional Profile: MIF

Body: 5-foot-8, 125-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Slow load with the lower half and hands getting set tucked into the body with a wrapped bat angle.  Traditional stride into a very wide base with strong linear push with the lower half.  Works to a firm front side and keeps the head behind the ball at contact.  Shows the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.  Level bat path with a top hand strong finish.

Power: 78 mph exit velocity off the tee and 82 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-80 mph.  ¾ arm slot with a whippy arm action.
