Kansas Summer Open: Outfielders Edition

Prep Baseball Report Kansas hosted the Kansas Summer Open on July 20th at Wichita State University with players coming from the 2022 class through the 2025 class.  53 players from across the state of Kansas as well as players coming in from Missouri, Oklahoma, and as far as California attended the event going through a pro-style workout.  You can click on any of the names to access the player's personal profile.  Today we take and in-depth look at the 15 outfielders that attended the event and break down their player swing mechanics, defensive actions, and more.

There were four outfielders that broke the 7 second barrier on the laser timed 60 with Austin Selenke leading the way at 6.84 seconds.  Keaton Catlin posted a 60 time of 6.88 with Jaron Brown at 6.91 and Taccarri Brown at 6.93 seconds.

A duo of players led the way in outfield arm strength with both Taccarri Brown and Kade Sheldon both posting 85 mph radar gun readings.  Blaine Bourne came in right behind them at 83 mph with Jaron Brown and Stone Elattrache both coming in at 82 mph.

The top exit velocity off the tee amongst the outfielders belonged to Jaxon Bowles at 87 mph.  Dayton Pelfrey came in right behind him at 85 mph with Hank Welu and Jaxson Bean both at 84 mph.   Bowles saw his exit velo jump during the BP session raising it up to 95 mph according to Trackman.  Carter Prather and Kade Sheldon both raised their exit velocities during BP up to 91 mph.

Jaxson Bean OF / RHP / Eisenhower , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/RHP

Body: 6-foot-2, 165-pound long limbed and projectable frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Pre-sets the weight into a bent back knee.  Hands get set away from the body and starts with a vertical bat angle.  Short two tap stride into a wide base.  Quick twitch swing with short and compact routes to the ball.  Gets good extension with hands working hard to the inside part of the ball.  Level bat path with a line drive approach.  Barrel gets into the zone early and stays in the zone through contact.  Quick hands through the zone with solid rotational acceleration metrics.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity off the tee and 89 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-81 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a loose arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with aggressive rhythm and good body control.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with solid glove action and soft hands.  Uses a shuffle crow hop technique with good momentum headed towards target.  

Run: 7.27 runner in the 60.

Blaine Bourne OF / RHP / Circle, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/RHP

Body: 5-foot-9, 155-pound proportional and athletic frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and wide base with an athletic posture.  No stride technique with hands getting set back deep with slight arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Will also show a traditional stride with more rhythm.  Rotational path with the hands with a strong top hand finish.  Slight uphill bat path with a pull side approach.  Hands work quickly through the zone with strong rotation around the core.

Power: 82 mph exit velocity off the tee and 87 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-83 mph. Over the top arm slot with a long and clean arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and aggressive routes.  Works behind fly balls well with clean exchanges out of the glove.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with good glove action and soft hands.   Step behind crow hop technique with strong momentum headed towards the target.

Run: 7.40 runner in the 60.

Jaxon Bowles 3B / RHP / Manhattan, KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 6-foot-2, 210-pound physical and mature frame with present strength.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Hands float down below the shoulder height with a high back elbow.  Simple stride with lower half working linearly through the swing into a firm front leg.  Rotational path with the hands and an uphill bat path working the ball up in the air.  Hands work quickly through the zone and shows good overall bat speed on the Blast Motion sensor.  Has strong rotational acceleration metrics as well.

Power: 87 mph exit velocity off the tee and 95 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-72 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a long and stiff arm action.  

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with aggressive rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with developing glove action and soft hands.  Shuffle crow hop technique.

Run: 7.13 runner in the 60.

Jaron Brown SS / OF / McPherson, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: MIF/OF

Body: 6-foot, 177-pound athletic frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Short weight stack into the back side and has a very short stride.  Hands get set quietly and quickly into position with a vertical bat angle.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Short and compact swing with developing extension.  Shows the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Hands work quickly through the zone with strong rotational acceleration metrics.

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 88 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-79 mph.  OF-82 mph.  ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter steps.  Fields the ball out in front of the body with a soft glove and some glove action.  Fields the slow roller with two hands inside the glove side leg.  In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with good glove action.  Shuffle crow hop technique with slight momentum headed towards target.

Run: 6.91 runner in the 60.

Taccarri Brown OF / RHP / Wichita Northwest , KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 6-foot-2, 150-pound long and lean build with room for added strength and size in the future.  

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Quick weight transfer into the back leg utilizing a short leg kick stride.  Short and compact routes to the ball with hands working hard to the inside part of the ball.  Middle of the field approach with a level bat path.  Hands work quickly through the zone and does a good job of maintaining balance and athleticism throughout the swing.

Power: 80 mph exit velocity off the tee and 87 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-85 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a longer arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter steps.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with some glove action and soft hands.  Back knee driven forward crow hop technique with good momentum headed to the target.  

Run: 6.93 runner in the 60.

Keaton Catlin OF / RHP / Washburn Rural , KS / 2022

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 6-foot, 160-pound lean and athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future. 

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and wide base with an athletic posture.  Hands get set quietly into position with a 45 degree bat angle.  Strong weight shift into the back leg and utilizes a traditional stride.  Good linear direction in the lower half working to a firm front leg.  Level bat path with a line drive approach and gets good extension.  Has quick hands through the zone and maintains balance throughout the swing.  Shows some strength at contact with the hands. 

Power: 78 mph exit velocity off the tee and 90 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-74 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a shorter arm action.  

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with some glove action and soft hands.  Works behind fly balls well and maintains rhythm throughout the exchange.  Step behind crow hop technique with solid momentum headed towards the target.

Run: 6.88 runner in the 60.

Stone Elattrache LHP / OF / Olathe West , KS / 2022

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 6-foot, 185-pound athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Hands work quietly into position with a slight arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Slow load into the back side with a short and traditional stride.  Short linear push off the back leg into a firm back leg.  Level bat path with a line drive approach.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Inside out and middle of the field approach.  

Power: 74 mph exit velocity off the tee and 85 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: LH.  OF-82 mph. Over the top arm slot with a long and clean arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg out in front of the body with good glove action and soft hands.  Utilizes a quick shuffle technique with strong momentum headed to the target. 

Run: 7.07 runner in the 60.

Gunner Hewitt OF / LHP / Maize, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 5-foot-11, 145-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture.  Rhythmic leg kick stride with quick and strong weight shift into the back leg.  Linear path with the lower half working into a firm front leg.  Top hand strong swing and finish.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Shows the ability to hit the ball from gap to gap.  Has good balance throughout the swing.  Hands work quickly through the zone.

Power: 75 mph exit velocity off the tee and 86 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: LH.  OF-78 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action and long release.  

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled and smooth rhythm with shorter footwork.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg a little deep into the body with soft hands and good glove action.  Step behind crow hop technique with solid momentum headed to the target.

Run: 7.62 runner in the 60.

Dayton Pelfrey RHP / OF / Kapaun Mount Carmel, KS / 2022

Positional Profile: OF/RHP 

Body: 6-foot-2, 160-pound long limbed and lean frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and upright posture.  Quiet set up with the hands getting set at shoulder height with a vertical bat angle.  Simple stride that stays slightly open.  Short weight stack onto the back leg with a rotational path in the lower body into a firm front leg.  Rotational path with the hands and pull side approach.  Slight uphill bat path and tries to work the ball in the air.  Shows some strength at contact when hits with leverage.  Barrel gets into the zone early and stays through the zone well.

Power: 85 mph exit velocity off the tee and 90 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-81 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a shorter arm action and longer release.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with solid glove action and soft hands.  Shuffle crow hop technique with short momentum to target.

Run: 7.08 runner in the 60.

Carter Prather OF / LHP / Kearney, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 6-foot, 175-pound athletic build with room for added strength and size in the future to the frame.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Presets the weight into the back side with a slightly bent back knee.  Slow load with the hands working them far back with arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Level bat path with a rotational path with the hands.  Strong top hand finish with good balance.  Linear push in the lower half into a firm front leg.  Hits with good leverage and shows some strength at contact.  Hands work very quickly through the zone and has good overall bat speed.

Power: 80 mph exit velocity off the tee and 91 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: LH.  OF-78 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a clean arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with shorter steps and controlled rhythm.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with good glove action and soft hands.  Clean transfers out of the glove and does a good job of maintaining rhythm.  Back knee driven forward crow hop technique with strong momentum headed towards target.

Run: 7.39 runner in the 60.

Austin Selenke OF / LHP / Bishop Carroll, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 5-foot-8, 133-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and wide base with and upright posture.  Flat barrel set with the hands getting set deep at the shoulder with a slight arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Short stride with the weight rocking into the back leg.  Short linear drive with the lower half into a firm front leg.  Long path to the ball with a slight up hill bat path and short extension.  Pull side approach with some strength in the hands.  Rotational path with the upper body and maintains balance throughout the swing.  Hands work quickly through the zone.

Power: 81 mph exit velocity off the tee and 85 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: LH.  OF-73 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a long arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with aggressive rhythm and longer strides.  Works behind fly balls well with good rhythm.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with soft hands and some glove action.  Shuffle crow hop technique with clean exchanges out of the glove.

Run: 6.84 runner in the 60.

Kade Sheldon OF / RHP / Derby , KS / 2023

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 6-foot-1, 190-pound physical and athletic build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture.  Floating hands with a rhythmic swing and slightly wrapped barrel angle.  Hands get set away from the body with a slight arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Easy and slow weight stack into the back side and works a traditional stride to a narrow base and slightly bent front leg.  Lower half works short and linear through the zone.  Hands work quickly through the zone and maintains balance throughout the swing.

Power: 83 mph exit velocity off the tee and 91 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-85 mph.  Over the top arm slot with a long arm action and release.

Defense:  In the outfield attacks the ball with smooth rhythm and shorter strides.  Works behind fly balls well with good rhythm and exchanges.  Fields the ball off the glove side leg slightly deep with a firm glove and developing glove action.  Back knee driven forward crow hop technique with good momentum headed towards the target.

Brenden Stanley OF / 3B / Olathe East, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF/3B

Body: 5-foot-10, 155-pound lean and developing build with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture.  Quick rock of the weight into the back side and raises up in the posture with a short leg kick stride.  Hands get set quietly into position with a flat bat angle.  Level bat path and line drive approach.  Works the hands hard to the inside part of the ball.  Short extension through the ball.  Does a good job of matching plane with the pitch and maintains balance throughout the swing.  

Power: 79 mph exit velocity off the tee and 81 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  INF-67 mph.  OF-68 mph.  High ¾ arm slot with a loose arm action.

Defense: In the infield attacks the ball with active feet and a feel for working around the ball.  Fields the ball deep into the body with developing glove action and a firm glove.  In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg with a feel for glove action and softer hands.  Shuffle crow hop technique with short momentum headed towards the target.

Run: 7.80 runner in the 60.

Toby Stephens OF / RHP / San Clemente, CA / 2023

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 5-foot-9, 170-pound proportional build and athletic build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Slow load with the lower half and hands getting the barrel set to a 45 degree bat angle.  Hands work tight to the body and has short and compact routes to the ball.  Linear direction with the lower half working into a firm front leg with a narrow base.  Maintains good control of the body throughout the swing.  

Power: 81 mph exit velocity off the tee and 82 mph exit velocity in BP.

Arm: RH.  OF-75 mph. Over the top arm slot with a short arm action.

Defense: In the outfield attacks the ball with controlled rhythm and shorter strides.  Breaks down the feet early when fielding the ball.  Fields the ball on the outside of the glove side leg deep into the body with developing glove action and a firm glove.  Shuffle crow hop technique with strong follow through and momentum headed towards target.

Hank Welu OF / LHP / Valley Center, KS / 2024

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 6-foot, 185-pound well-built and athletic frame.

Hit: LHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and wide base.  Upright posture with the lower and upper half.  Hands get set high above the shoulders with a vertical bat angle.  Quick rock of the weight into the back side with a short linear push into a firm front leg.  Strong top hand finish on the swing with a rotational bat path.  Hits with good leverage and shows some strength at contact.  Level bat path and line drive approach.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity off the tee and 92 mph exit velocity in BP.
