2023 Team Preview: Glenbrook High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, our staff is excited for the upcoming spring season.  Players and coaches have been working all fall and through December, in preparation for the upcoming season and as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Programs across the state have goals and aspirations to finish the year in Sulphur, LA at the LHSAA State Tournament, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes a reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams and players across the state, as we preview many of the great programs from Louisiana.  We will take you right up to the first pitch of this season with these team previews and we'll continue providing coverage throughout the spring.

Please keep checking back throughout the season, as we strive to be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across Louisiana.  Each week we will release our players of the week, as well as our Power 25 Rankings, which encompasses the top 25 teams in the state, regardless of class.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.  If you did not receive a questionnaire and would like to fill one out, please send an email to [email protected].

Team Outlook

2022 was an interesting year for the Glenbrook HS baseball program, as last year's team was unable to compete in the LHSAA playoffs, due to a one year required probationary period for all incoming LHSAA member schools.  The handcuffs are off of the Apaches for this spring, as they look to claim the school's first ever LHSAA state title, after having won the MAIS Class 2A state championship in 2021.  The talent is abundant, spread across all classes, in Minden, LA for Head Coach Tony Sanders and company, and it all starts with this year's senior class.  Senior RHP Hayden Harmon is one of the more impressive arms in the state's 2023 class, as he boasts a heavy 88-91 mph FB, to go along with a devastating, sharp 76-80 mph SL with spin rates consistently above 2500 RPM's.  Fellow senior LHP Maddox Mandino is an athletic and twitchy southpaw, who runs his FB up to 90 mph and also features a quality SL and CH.  Senior Turner McLelland has a live arm and will also be a top of the rotation guy for Coach Sanders this spring.  Sophomore RHP Easton Sanders oozes projection with a tall, lean, and projectable 6'3" frame.  We saw Sanders work in the mid-upper 80's last year as a freshman for the Apaches in a non-district matchup against Class 5A Dutchtown HS.  Senior LHP Toby Haulmark provides a good change of pace for Glenbrook on the mound, as the southpaw primarily works his FB in the low-mid 80's with his go-to pitch being a late fading CH.  Offensively, the Apaches lineup looks to be a potent one.  Glenbrook returns their leading hitter over the past 3 seasons in senior SS Cason Clemons, who is your prototypical top of the order offensive player.  Mandino is a super dynamic LHH with speed to cause chaos once he gets on the base paths.  Once Clemons and Mandino get on base, the Apaches have power guys to drive them in like McLelland and Sanders.  A couple of other guys to keep an eye on are Junior C Landry Powell and Sophomore 2B Jackson Waller.  Powell is an above average defensive backstop that has really grown into the position and will be a run producer offensively.  Waller is a solid defender in the middle of the infield and displays a flat stroke with bat speed from the left side.  Who stands in the way of the Apaches claiming their first LHSAA state title?  They'll be competing in the Select Division IV Playoffs which has some really good competition that includes the like of Ascension Catholic, Central Private, Opelousas Catholic, Sacred Heart, Ouachita Christian, and St. Frederick's.  There aren't many schools, however, that boast two Division I arms that can run their FB into the 90's, with a third in Sanders, who will probably hit the 90 mph mark sooner, rather than later, so we fully expect to see Glenbrook in Sulphur, LA competing for the program's first LHSAA state title in school history.
