2024 Team Preview: Archbishop Rummel High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

Archbishop Rummel enjoyed one heck of a ride during the 2023 season, on route to finishing the year with a 26-15 overall record.  The Raiders got at the right time, as they ended the season winning nine of their last ten games, with their lone loss coming at the hands of district rival Jesuit, in the LHSAA Select Division I State Championship Game, by a score of 1-0.  That loss to the Blue Jays, although sour, has motivated this year's Rummel team, as they look to get back to the state tournament to avenge their title game loss.  Head Coach Frank Cazeaux has the good fortune of returning seven starting position players from last year's team, and it all starts with senior SS Michael Ryan.  The LSU signee had a monster junior season last spring for the Raiders, as he finished the year hitting at a .420 clip with 7 HR, 31 RBI, and 49 R, on route to earning honors on our 2023 All-State team.  He carried that momentum over to the summer circuit as well, and has solidified himself as a "must-see" prospect for MLB organizations, ahead of the 2024 MLB First-Year Player Draft.  Joining Ryan on the infield, will be fellow senior Giancarlo Arencibia, who is a former Future Gamer, and has one of the best gloves in the entire state, giving the Raiders arguably the best duo up the middle of the infield.  Junior Gavin Nix, a Louisiana Tech recruit, had a jam-up sophomore campaign and returns to the infield for Rummel as well, giving the Raiders their SS, 2B, and 3B back for the 2024 season.  Fellow junior Evan Burg, a Tulane recruit, is back in the outfield, as is junior Gavin Kennedy, who is an athletic left-handed hitting outfielder that remains uncommitted for now.  On the mound, Rummel returns five arms who saw valuable time last spring, but none bigger than Arencibia, who will once again be the Raders #1 starter.  Arencibia's run through last year's playoffs was nothing short of brilliant, as the Tulane recruit tossed a perfect game in the 2nd round of the playoffs, before beating the defending state champion Catholic BR Bears in the semifinals, to send Rummel to the state title game.  Rummel caught fire at the right time last spring, and they return the majority of their lineup in 2024, so we fully expect the Raiders to be a contender once again this coming season.
