Louisiana Senior Games: Quick Hits

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Eunice, LA - Our first event of the fall was held this past Saturday September 16, 2023 at LSU-Eunice with our Uncommitted Senior Games.  This event was for uncommitted prospects in Louisiana's 2024 class, who are still chasing the dream of playing at the collegiate level, and the good news for all of the players, was that there were several colleges in attendance, from JUCO to NAIA to Division I.  Today, we continue our post-event coverage of the event with another edition of of Quick Hits, which focuses on some of the prospects that caught our eye.  Be sure to follow us, on all of our social media platforms, for continued coverage of the 2023 PBR Louisiana Senior Games!

PITCHERS SHINE

+ 2024 RHP Alex Morrison (Tioga HS)

Projectable 6'2" 170 lbs. frame with long limbs.  We last saw the Tioga HS product at our Monroe Summer Open back in May, and it looked liked he had grown 3-4 inches since that last look.  Morrison made the most of his opportunity at the Senior Games by delivering one of the best pitching performances of the day.  In his inning of work, he ended up striking out three hitters and was collected whiffs on both his FB and CB.  He hit a personal best top FB velocity at 89 mph and sat 85-88 mph throughout, while showing the ability to locate to his glove-side, as well as up in the zone.  His 76-77 mph SL was sharp with late bite down in the zone and he also showed feel for a late-fading 82-83 mph CH.  Morrison just turned 17 years old last month, so he really should be a 2025 prospect, which means that there's likely more on the way for the athletic right-hander.  He'll get another chance to impress upon college recruiters at our State Games at LSU on 09/30-10/01.

+ 2024 RHP Austin Pounds (Archbishop Hannan HS)

Long, lean, and projectable 6'3" 170 lbs. frame.  Pounds bursted onto the scene at Saturday's Senior Games leaving us and the college coaches in attendance wanting to see more.  The Archbishop Hannan HS product showed off a loose and easy arm action, releasing the ball from a 3/4 slot.  He commanded his 85-87 mph FB to his glove side well, while mixing in a "11-5" shaped 70-72 mph CB with late depth.  Pounds also pulled the strings on a couple of nice 76-77 mph CH's and showed confidence in landing it to both RHH's and LHH's.  He's another high-ceiling guy coming out of the Senior Games with a lot of "buzz", and he'll get another chance to continue to increase his stock in 2 weeks at our State Games at LSU on 09/30-10/01.

+ 2024 LHP Bennett Stakes (Southside HS)

Physical 6'4" 220 lbs. XL frame.  The Southside HS product was a recent riser in our 2024 State Rankings and he had another quality outing at Saturday's Senior Games.  There's some "funkiness" to Stakes's delivery, as he rocks and leans back during his leg lift, before releasing the ball from an over-the-top slot with a quick arm action.  He worked his FB up to 88 mph and sat 84-87 mph, and although his control wasn't at his best on Saturday, he was awfully tough to square up when he was in the zone, as he finished with 3 K's in his inning of work.  His 78-82 mph SL and 80-82 mph CH are still developing secondary offerings that need to be refined, but there's no denying the arm talent.  As we've mentioned previously, Stakes is a high academic prospect, which will only help his recruiting process moving forward.  He'll have the same opportunity as Morrison and Pounds above, as he'll also be toeing the rubber at this year's State Games in two weeks at LSU.

+ 2024 LHP Kole Hebert (Breaux Bridge HS)

Physical and well-developed 6'0" 200 lbs. frame.  Hebert took an impressive batting practice on Saturday, showing power to the pull-side with exit velocities up to 96 mph.  His upside on the mound, however, is where he really shined.  The Breaux Bridge HS product worked a clean inning on the mound collecting a strikeout.  It's a simple and repeatable delivery with a short arm stroke and a 3/4 release.  Hebert commanded his 81-83 mph to both sides of the plate, while also showing swing & miss potential on his 72-75 mph SL that had late bite down in the zone.

POSITION PLAYERS TO FOLLOW

+ 2024 C Caleb Hastings (Lutcher HS)

Physical 6'0" 195 lbs. frame with a barrel chest and strong lower-half; Hastings is built exactly how you'd want your backstop to be built...strong from the ground up.  The Lutcher HS product did not get cheated in batting practice, as he aggressively turned his back hip, while staying tight and compact to deliver a heavy barrel to contact.  Hastings had one of the loudest BP rounds of the day, showing power to the pull-side with exit velocities up to 92 mph.  That power showed in game as well, as Hastings hit one of the hardest balls of the day on a single to right field in Game 1.  Defensively, he's a solid receiver and did an excellent job of working to block every pitch thrown in the dirt.  He also showed off a strong arm, up to 77 mph from the crouch, with an event best pop time of 1.97.

+ 2024 3B Talan Theriot (Hahnville HS)

Athletic 5'11" 195 lbs. frame.  Theriot is the epitome of the word "gamer", as he always seems to perform in game when he have a look at him.  The Hahnville HS product is more than the sum of his parts and will make a great addition to a college program at the next level.  He took one of the cleaner rounds of defense on the day, showing quality actions, the ability to play with one hand, and the ability to throw from different arm slots with accuracy.  Theriot hits from a more upright and open stance and coils into his back hip during his load and stride.  He connected on a FB up over the plate for a loud triple to straight away centerfield in Game 2.

+ 2024 OF Tate Dickinson (Belle Chasse HS)

Athletic with broad shoulders and room to fill out at 6'1" 170 lbs.  Dickinson was one of the more intriguing position player prospects on Saturday.  He's an all-around quality athlete who posted a 7.08 laser-timed 60 on a slow track.  The Belle Chasse HS product also got good reads and jumps in the OF, while showing good arm strength up to 85 mph.  He looks "hitterish" in the box and we hate using that term, but that's what comes to mind when you watch him in his set-up.  Dickinson stayed short and inside the baseball on a FB on the outer-half to shoot it the other way for a single.

+ 2024 INF Trevor Dooley (Loreauville HS)

Athletic 5'8" 170 lbs. frame.  Dooley is one of the "data darlings" to come out of Saturday's Senior Games, even after playing entire football game on Friday night as a quarterback.  When we were reviewing the Blast Motion data captured at the event, we noticed that the Loreauville HS products's name kept popping up a top the leaderboards.  Using a simple and repeatable swing, Dooley drove his back knee through the ground to create force and power, while delivering a compact path to the ball with uphill extension and a two-handed finish.  He finished as the leader in max hand speed at 24.5 mph, average hand speed at 23.3 mph, and average bat speed at 73.1 mph.

+ 2024 1B Gabe Guidry (Barbe HS)

Physical 6'3" 185 lbs. frame.  There is always at least one uncommitted senior prospect, each year for Barbe, who comes onto the scene late and produces for the Bucs.  Last year, it was Ashton Quiller, who is now a freshman at Nicholls State and this year, it could be Guidry.  The uncommitted first baseman put together a quality Senior Games performance that included a 1-2 effort at the plate with a two-strike single up the middle on a FB up in the zone.  Guidry also showed athletic actions around the first base bag on double plays and on the slow rolling play throwing across to third base.
