Quick Hits: New Orleans Summer Open

New Orleans, LA - On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, we traveled to Tulane University for our New Orleans Summer Open.  This was our last open event of the summer and our first time back in the Big Easy this year.  Each player took part in running the 60 yard dash, taking batting practice, and participating in defensive drills, and we ended the day with pitchers throwing bullpens.  Today, we continue our post-event coverage of the New Orleans Summer Open with a look at some of the uncommitted prospects that impressed.

2025 UTIL Ryan Darrah (Brother Martin HS)

Athletic 6'2" 170 lbs. frame with wide shoulders, narrow hips, and plenty of room to tack on weight.  The Brother Martin HS product earned the "Hitter of the Year" award for the Catholic League this past spring, which is saying something, considering he was only a sophomore.  At the plate, Darrah hits from an upright and balanced stance with relaxed hands held just below shoulder height.  He then draws his hands back during a simple load and stride, before taking an inside out path through the ball with uphill extension.  Darrah maintains balance from start to finish and was at his best when he was driving the ball through the middle of the field.  He's a versatile defender in the field, having played both infield and outfield for the Crusaders this past spring, and is a really good overall athlete, as he posted a 6.85 laser-timed 60 on Tuesday.

2024 INF/RHP Cary Aymond (Lafayette Christian Academy)

Durable 5'8" 180 lbs. frame with a strong lower-half.  At the plate, shorter levers allow Aymond to make a tight turn to contact with level extension and a two-handed finish.  He exhibited a strong lower-half during his BP round, hitting the ball especially hard to the pull-side gap.  On the mound, he offered some intrigue as well with a variety of offerings and some interesting spin rates, especially his "11-5" shaped CB that averaged 2500 RPM's per Trackman.

2025 OF Gabe Greene (Dunham HS)

Athletic 5'11" 165 lbs. lean frame with room to add strength and physicality.  The Dunham HS product was another really good overall athlete in attendance on Tuesday.  He started his day off by posting a 6.89 laser-timed 60.  At the plate, Greene starts in an open, narrow, and upright stance.  He glides with his front foot during a simple load and stride before getting his barrel behind the ball early and working flat through extension.  There was a little length to the swing at times, but he was on the barrel a lot, and showed the ability to drive the ball back up the middle and to the opposite field gap.

2024 INF/RHP Trey Turnage (Pearl River HS)

Long and athletic 6'2" 180 lbs. frame; Turnage impressed with his arm, as he recorded a 85 mph positional velocity from both the OF and INF, the latter of which, was good for an event best.  On the mound, he offered some intrigue as well, as he showed the ability to throw from a higher 3/4 slot, as well as a low sidearm slot.  His FB got up to 82 mph from the higher slot, but we really liked the sink and run on his FB from the lower slot, as well as the sweep that he showed on his SL from down low as well.

2025 INF Michael Relle (Archbishop Hannan HS)

Athletic 5'10" 165 lbs. frame; Relle had a really nice overall day on Tuesday, showcasing skills on both the offensive and defensive side of things.  On the infield, he took arguably the cleanest round of infield play on the day, as he worked to receive every ball with soft hands off the left side of his body before moving with athletic footwork through his shuffle.  Relle also moved well laterally and on the bounder play, showing the ability to play with one hand.  At the plate, he kept things simple with a balanced, athletic, and repeatable swing with little head movement.  His path to contact was direct with slightly uphill extension, staying gap to gap in his approach.
