COVINGTON  ̶  Last night the Prep Baseball Report staff was on hand to catch the playoff match-up between St. Paul’s and Scotlandville. St. Paul’s would get the victory in the first game of the best-of-three series, 3-1. The two teams will face off again today with game two starting at noon, and the if-necessary game starting at 3:00 PM.

Louisiana State recruit, 2019 RHP Jacob Scherer (St. Paul’s) got the start for the Wolves, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out six and walking three in a complete game effort. Scherer sat 83-86 mph with his fastball early in the contest, and settled in at 83-84 mph. Scherer showed a breaking ball with 12/6 shape, early break, looseness to the spin, and depth at 68-70 mph. However, his changeup became the out-pitch for the night, collecting a couple strikeouts with the offering with its late, hard fade action and fastball arm speed at 74-75 mph. In addition, Scherer flashed a slider type pitch later in the contest at 74-75 mph with sharper, more lateral break.

2018 LHP Destin Dotson (Scotlandville) took the mound for the Hornets and matched Scherer nearly pitch for pitch. Dotson also went the distance, tossing six innings allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out eight and walking four. A long, lean 6-foot-6, 196-pound frame with plenty of room for projection, Dotson pitched 82-84 mph with his fastball, but reached back when needed, touching 86 mph.

Offensively, St. Paul’s was led by Grant Grosch, who finished 2-for-2, and two RBI, including a solo home run in the 4th inning. Rhodes College recruit, 2017 IF William Heurtin also added an inside-the-park home run for the Wolves in the 3rd inning. 2019 SS Beau Neelis got the offense going for the Wolves in the 2nd inning, as he sent a hard shot into the left-center gap for a triple, and scored on a sacrifice-fly from Grosch.

2017 SS Jacouri Hicks (Scotlandville) finished 1-for-3 for the Hornets. A long, lean 6-foot-3, 160-pound frame with long levers, Hicks showed fluid rhythm in his left-handed swing with an on-plane path, and bat speed through the zone. The big blow on the night for Scotlandville came from 2017 IF Robert Brown, as he doubled home the lone run for the Hornets in the 4th inning.

Although he finished the day 0-for-2, 2017 OF Jalen Hicks (Scotlandville) showed fluid rhythm with bat speed from his left-handed swing. A long, lean 6-foot-4, 160-pound frame, Hicks showed quality arm strength from the outfield during pregame, and came into the contest with seven home runs on the season, even with missing a significant portion of the Hornets schedule due to an injury.
