Future Games helps ignite interest in Shaw

Matthew Shaw SS / OF / Worcester Academy, MA / 2020

BRIMFIELD, Ma. - Matthew Shaw saw a big difference between playing in the Future Games a year ago and this past August.

“Last year I was younger and didn’t have the strength against someone throwing 87-90,” Shaw explained. “This year, after hitting the weight room, I was ready for it.”

The Worcester Academy junior drew notice with his performance, receiving an offer from Maryland two weeks ago. A visit to Northeastern is planned next month once soccer season ends.

“They like my attitude, how I play the game and want to win,” the ninth-ranked 2020 player in New England said. “They like how I swing the bat, make contact and can hit for power. But one of the biggest things is my speed and athleticism. If you want to play college baseball at the highest level those are big things.”

Versatility adds to the equation when it comes to Shaw playing at the next level.

“Not a lot of people can play infield and outfield equally well, but I grew up doing it,” explained the top-ranked junior shortstop in New England. “I don’t have to play one position, I have the versatility that I can play well at both. I have that quick twitch.”

A powerful arm helps when it comes to playing more than one position.

“My arm is a lot stronger now,” Shaw said of where his game has improved over the past year. “Hitting is another area I continue to improve upon. Hitting is a process but not an easy process. Every day you get a little better but it’s a long process. I’m starting to get my swing together now. I’m learning things about my swing and I’m feeling a lot better about it.”
