Let's take a look into the 3A…

2023 Recap

The 2023 state title game saw River Hill take on C. Milton Wright in the nightcap. In one of the more impressive pitching performances that we have seen in some time, junior lefty Henry Zatkowski (Duke) was just about as unhittable as it gets, pitching a complete game one-hit shutout, walking none and punching out 15 en route to a 1-0 victory for River Hill.

2024 sees some shakeup in the regions, as the MPSSAA has moved a plethora of teams' classifications throughout the state. Powerhouses Sherwood and Severna Park are now in the 3A and should make for a very interesting spring. Below you will find information for each team in each region, including the top 4 teams that we see leading the charge throughout the season. March 21st kickstarts the regular season across the MPSSAA, and we wish the best of luck to all teams across the Old Line State.

Region Breakdowns

3A West

Region I Region II
Manchester Valley Magruder
Westminster Damascus
Linganore Rockville
Oakdale Wootton
Tuscarora Watkins Mill
North Hagerstown
South Hagerstown

Notes

A highly competitive region I is on the horizon in the 3A West, as we see intriguing talent dispersed throughout. Manchester Valley will be led by two seniors in shortstop Hayden Askew and right-handed pitcher Gene Magin (Towson), however, lack some depth to make a serious push to get out of the region in 2024. Westminster is certainly exciting, as senior Clayton Dorsey (Frederick CC) and junior Will Mollman will lead the offense, and sophomore Brandon Barrett and junior Chase Taylor will headline the rotation. South Hagerstown brings back hard-throwing righty Isaiah Licorish (Coppin State) who is one of the more exciting arms to watch in the region, however, lacks real depth behind him. The four teams we see that have a real chance of getting out of this region are Linganore, Oakdale, Tuscarora, and North Hagerstown. Linganore returns a slew of senior arms, led by Seton Hall commit Stephen Curry with depth provided by Zach Dodson (Frostburg State), Austin Perando (Charleston WV), and Dylan Remphrey (Anne Arundel CC). The offense has some depth as well, led by Bryce Meyer (Waynesburg) and Gavin Liberto with an intriguing sophomore on the cusp of a breakout year in Chase Perry making an impact on both sides of the ball. Oakdale is interesting, as senior Britton Wildasin (Goldey-Beacom) will lead the pitching staff and can match up with just about any ace across this region. Seniors Jake McKenzie (Penn State-York), Nick Miller (Frederick CC), and Cole Swinimer (Frederick CC) will provide depth throughout the lineup and should be able to put up some runs consistently. Opposed to past years, Tuscarora will rely on their offense to provide a spark this spring, as Parker Kopp, Cameron Vachon, and Caden Spangenberg are all highly touted bats to keep eyes on. On the flip side, North Hagerstown has a slew of highly talented arms to watch, led by senior Mac Stiffler (West Virginia). Fellow senior Henry Ortiz (Towson) will also add depth to the rotation, with a highly interesting junior combo in Ian Kelley (NC State) and Henry Lewis (UMBC) that will follow suit. The big question mark will be on the offensive side for the Hubs.

Region II looks to be a three-team race in 2024, as Magruder, Damascus, and Wootton have intriguing pieces on both sides of the ball. Magruder is led by a high-powered offense, as Hunter St Denis (Maine), Avery Grain, Terrion Pettus, Jovi Silva, and Matt Strahan are all key impact bats throughout the lineup. After Xavier Headen (Barton) and St Denis on the bump, however, Magruder may need to rely on some underclassmen to provide some key innings. Damascus may be the most balanced team in this region. Senior two-way Bryce Mitchell (Bucknell) will look to lead the Swarmin' Hornets on both sides of the ball with pitching depth provided by junior William Heyse. Offensively, look for breakout years from senior Nicholas Torres (Ursinus) and juniors Cameron Wilberding and Jake Lokos. Wootton has talent on both sides of the ball as well, led by sophomore standout, catcher Kai Schmelzer. Look for a strong junior-led pitching staff to carry the weight in Matthew Kunst and Luke Brunner

3A North

Region I Region II
Catonsville Baltimore City
Dulaney Poly Tech
Franklin Digital Harbor
Lansdowne Patterson
Milford Mill Aberdeen
Overlea Bel Air
Towson Edgewood

Notes

The 3A North Region I in our eyes is a two-team race between former 4A Dulaney and Towson. Dulaney will be led by senior standout Thomas Mezzullo (McDaniel) on the offensive side, with fellow seniors Brendan Altman and Maddox Helme (Albright) providing key depth. Look for senior Ben Feltman and junior Connor Dow to lead the pitching staff, with an intriguing freshman on the horizon in Logan Park to impact at the dish. The Fightin' Generals of Towson are always exciting to watch and coach Tormey consistently has his guys ready to play. Senior Aziz Bishop and junior Marquise Harris will lead the offense, with senior southpaw Jackson Huck back as the ace of the staff after a strong 2023 campaign.

Region II looks to be a three-team race this year, as Poly Tech returns a plethora of impact players on both sides of the ball with the likes of Leo Boehringer (Rochester), Collin McLean (Tuskegee), Isaiah Jones (Tuskegee), and Demetris Beverly (St. Mary's). Poly Tech looks to make a deeper run this spring after getting bumped in the state quarters a year ago. Aberdeen will be led by senior position players Jayden Saunders (Notre Dame of Maryland) and Ian Walton (Notre Dame of Maryland) after losing in the region finals a year ago. Bel Air is always an exciting follow, as outfielder Jordan Kozak (Notre Dame of Maryland) and two-way Brennan Deremiek are back to lead the Bobcats.

3A South

Region I Region II
Chesapeake (AA) Atholton
Northeast (AA) Long Reach
Howard Oakland Mills
Marriotts Ridge River Hill
Mount Hebron Blake
Sherwood

Notes

The 3A South Region I should be highly competitive in 2024, as we see Chesapeake and Northeast as the favorites to get out of the region, however, talent is evident throughout with the likes of Howard, Marriotts Ridge, and Mount Hebron. Chesapeake will lean on a two-headed monster on the bump in Camryn Sisson (Penn State-Brandywine) and an intriguing junior in Christian Spoone. The lack of offensive depth may hurt the Cougars however, look for Sisson and Spoone to be able to match up fairly well with any other team's arm in the region. Northeast is extremely young this season, however, very talented even with the departure of lefty standout LJ Drummond. Sophomores Jayden Saraullo, Chase McLaughlin, and Cooper Meeks are highly talented young players to keep eyes on not just this year, but years to come. Howard has Dylan Abrahams back to lead the pitching staff, however, lacks real depth offensively. Marriotts Ridge brings back seniors Chase Kamerman and Jack Coughlin to lead the Mustangs and should be able to compete throughout the spring. Mount Hebron can lean on senior middle infielder Lucas Edwards (Mt. Aloysius).

Region II has a plethora of highly talented players throughout, however, each team certainly has its question marks. Atholton has Linus Byrns to lead their pitching staff, however, the depth offensively and following Byrns on the bump may be questioned. The top junior in the state of Maryland is back for Long Reach in Aidan West (NC State) and he will look to provide a consistent spark for the Lightning this spring, with depth offensively throughout the lineup. River Hill has one of the top prep arms in the senior class, as southpaw Henry Zatkowski (Duke) is back to lead the defending 3A state champions. River Hill, however, has to fill the void of key impact bats from last year's seniors in Riley Finkelston, Eje Okojie, Demetre Koutras, and Brady Young. Blake returns senior arm, Jack Doyle (Marymount), however, loses one of the top arms in the state a year ago in Blake Sanderoff. Sherwood drops to the 3A in 2024 and may have the most balanced roster in the region coming off three consecutive 4A state titles. Senior Mac Crismond (Charleston WV) will lead the pitching staff with depth provided by junior Kyle Glasser and sophomore Sam Rosenwald. Offensively, the Warriors will lean on senior Liam Irving (Allegany PA) and juniors Jacob Bagania and Ryan Rey. A dark horse in this lineup will certainly be the emergence of sophomore standout Carter Sweeney-Strawberry. The question will be whether or not Sherwood can fill the void left by standouts Amari Allen, Ryan Bouma, Brian Scott, Jack Andre, and Ben Berger following their graduation.

3A East

Region I Region II
Arundel Northern (Cal)
Severna Park St. Charles
South River Oxon Hill
James M Bennett Chopticon
Stephen Decatur Great Mills

Notes

Following region realignment, 3A East Region I becomes the region of death. All five teams bring in talent on both sides of the ball, however, we see three teams with a real possibility of making a deep run this spring. Arundel brings back a loaded rotation highlighted by the likes of seniors Tha’Mon McGriff (Delaware State) and Nicholas Dolbin (McDaniel), along with junior Dominic Erculiani (UMES). We look at an intriguing freshman in Luke Gamble along with junior Rowland Thursby to provide an offensive spark for the Wildcats this spring. Severna Park brings back one of the strongest senior classes in the state, led by a three-headed monster on the mound in seniors Sean Williams (Penn State), Nathan Murphy (George Washington), and standout two-way Angel Santiago-Cruz (Richmond). Offensively, look for Santiago-Cruz to be joined by another pair of seniors in Kody Phillips (Lebanon Valley) and Jackson O’Brien (Beloit) as Severna Park will be a scary sight to face come playoffs. Keep eyes on senior Quinn Yellin (Maryland) to lead South River on the bump this spring as they attempt to navigate their way throughout this region. James M. Bennett brings some decent depth on the mound, led by junior arms Cory Fisher and Trevin Whitelock along with sophomore Tanner Trudeau, however, we believe they lack the firepower to compete in this loaded region. Stephen Decatur headlines this region as the team to beat in 2024, as they continue to reload talent year in and year out. On the bump, they will attempt to fill the void of senior Ryan McLaughlin with a deep rotation highlighted by Lukas Loring, Nate Berzonski (Mount St. Mary’s), Matthew Wright (Mars Hill), AJ Kolb (Towson), and Eric Braica (Delaware Tech). The Seahawks offensively has one of the quickest lineups across the state, highlighted by Kolb, Waylon Hobgood (Salisbury), Caden Shockley, and Jackson Cheung. Decatur’s deep stable of two-way talent will make them the team to watch in one of the most talented regions throughout all four classifications.

Northern will be a team to keep eyes on, led by an intriguing two-way sophomore in David Holson III. St. Charles and Oxon Hill we see lacking the star power and depth to compete in this region, which leads to a two-team race between Chopticon and Great Mills in 3A East Region II. Chopticon has some intriguing talent on both sides of the ball. Offensively, juniors Kody Adkins and Owen Yates will look to bring a spark to the Braves offense. Depth on both sides of the ball will be provided by seniors Logan Quade and a duo of juniors in Landon Yates, and two-way Logan Carver. Great Mills returns depth on the mound, led by senior standout Ryan Brown (Mount St. Mary’s), along with Brock Midkeff (Notre Dame of Maryland). Offensively, look for junior Nick Hevner to have an increased role throughout the lineup joined by senior leaders in Luke Thompson and Mark Reineke.
