An intriguing matchup on Tuesday saw Huntingtown travel to North County for a matchup between two uncommitted arms in Junior lefty Evan Smith (Huntingtown) and Senior righty Thor Hildebrand (North County).

Both teams went back and forth, scoring in bunches throughout. Huntingtown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on an error committed by the North County second baseman. North County stormed back in the bottom half of the second, scoring four runs with some help from the Huntingtown defense and a huge bases loaded bunt single by Augustin Murillo. Huntingtown then continued the "back and forth" scoring in the third inning with a six spot to take a 7-4 lead, led by RBI singles by Sophomore Logan Hastings and Senior Kyle Norvell. Murillo and Kevin Santos added RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth to bring North County within one at 7-6. Freshman Hunter Thomas added an RBI single for Huntingtown in the fifth to push the lead to 8-6. Another error and a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth plated two more runs for North County to tie the game at eight a piece. A sac fly RBI by Jordan Bonhoff plated the would be winning run for North County, as they won the game 9-8.

Huntingtown

Evan Smith LHP / 1B / Huntingtown, MD / 2023

Got the start for Huntingtown in their game against North County, battling through four innings of work, striking out four and giving up four earned runs. Pitches with regular effort with a tough three-quarter slot, utilizing some quick arm speed and whip through release. Falls off slightly to the third base side after release, showcasing some lower half drive down the bump with intent for the zone. Pounded the zone with the fastball, working to both sides of the plate effectively with some arm side run at 83-85. The curveball was thrown with confidence, showcasing the ability to throw it in any count with bigger 1/7 shape at 67-68. Occasionally mixed in the changeup at 73-75. Induced a ton of weak contact throughout the outing.

Logan Hastings SS / RHP / Huntingtown, MD / 2024

Came in relief for Huntingtown, working two innings, giving up one earned run while striking out one. The arm works quick through release from a tough three-quarter slot, landing in line with home plate and pitching with intent. The fastball came out of the hand well at 83-85, showcasing feel to both slides of the plate and a relatively high spin rate sitting between 2300-2450 rpm. The curveball was the most impressive pitch of the night, working it down in the zone with tight, sharp break at 68-70. Showcased occasional depth, tending to back it up against right-handed batters with a high spin rate at 2780-2950 rpm. An arm that looks to make waves over the next few years, as the frame is athletic and wiry with the ability to gain muscle and fill out. One to keep eyes on.

North County

Thor Hildebrand 3B / RHP / North County, MD / 2023

Got the start for North County on the bump, working three innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Really liked the moxey and confidence on the mound, showcasing the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes in any count. The lean 6-3, 180 pound right-hander gets down the bump in a hurry, working from a high three-quarter slot and bigger leg kick into a tall balance point. The fastball played the top of the zone, with feel to the arm side at 79-81, mixing in a ton of confidence for a bigger 11/5 curveball for strikes at 61-63. The changeup showed occasional late fade at 73-75. Consistently induced weak contact and attacked the zone throughout his three innings of work.
