With the MPSSAA season coming to an end in a few weeks, we decided to take a quick look into the 4A and 3A state playoff picture. We break down each region giving our thoughts on who are the top contenders to win the region are. (Note: Wednesday and Thursday scores were not considered when this article was written)

4A

Right now as with our preseason preview, we still see B-CC as the favorite of the West Section I. Whitman looks to be the top competition out of the section, but still seem to be searching for consistency on the mound. Walter Johnson and Churchill round out our contenders, and don't count out Einstein, who could make a run as well....Gaithersburg is having one of the more surprising starts to the year in our eye in the West Section II. Right now they are our favorites to take the section, but Quince Orchard (who just beat the Trojans) and Thomas Wootton are right beside them....Section 1 of the 4A North looks like it is going to be a battle between Dulaney and Howard. Both teams have some of the best records in the state, and are our two leading candidates to come out of the section. Catonsville could be the cinderella coming out with a strong season thus far in the Baltimore county...North section II looks to be a competitive section with Sherwood and Urbana looking like the top contenders. Montgomery Blair is that third team who could shake up the bracket. Right now we're giving the edge to Sherwood simply because of their perfect 13-0 record heading into Thursday.. Urbana does look to be playing better baseball right now and does have the capability to win the section. It should be an exciting bracket...South Section I looks like it's going to be Northwestern as the top seed in the section. Not counting out Parkdale and DuVal as the other contenders....South Section II looks like it will be a battle to the end between Flowers and Roosevelt. Cannot count Bowie, but our prediction is Flowers comes out on top of this year after coming up short in years past...East Section I appears to be even tougher than we originally thought. With Arundel, Severna Park, Old Mill, and North County as all potential winners. If we had to rank them right now; No. 1 Severna Park, No. 2 Arundel, No. 3 North County, and No.4 Old Mill. East Section II looks like it will be between Leonardtown, one of the top teams in the SMAC, and Broadneck. Broadneck this season has been inconsistent, but do have some big wins this season in Arundel county.

3A

Starting with the West and section 1, the Rockville Rams look like the head of the class with their top record in Montgomery county. The Rams are off to a 10-1 start and are our top contender for the section. Watkins Mill is the two seed with Westminster as a potential surprise team...Section II of the West region looks like it's going to be a very competitive bracket. We think two teams have separated themselves from the crowd in Linganore and Gov. Thomas Johnson. Though Frederick and Tuscarora could pull off an upset, we feel these two schools are the top seeds of the section. It's a flip of a coin as to who will come out victorious though... In the North section I Franklin high school has to be the surprise of the MPSSAA this season. Currently off to a 12-0 start, Franklin has earned themselves the one seed in this section thus far. The rest of the crowd could be a scramble, but our bet is on Towson or Lansdowne to be the next two contenders... North section II looks to be a battle of Harford County schools, and our top seed goes to Bel Air. The Bobcats are off to a 9-1 start in the tough Upper Chesapeake Bay Conference. Their closest competition looks to be CM Wright, and Bel Air could separate themselves as the class of the section... In the South section 1 right now we have no clear-cut leader of the group. Baltimore Poly could be the best chance out of section 1 with their 9-2 start to the season... South section II looks to be a battle of SMAC powers Chopticon, Northern, and Huntingtown. If we had to rank them right now it's Chopticon 1, Huntingtown 2, and Northern 3... In the East section I, it looks like it should be a battle between Mt. Hebron and Reservoir, with Atholton being the next best bet. Do not count out Centennial, as they have already shown the ability to beat top teams... In Section II of the east Stephen Decatur has separated themselves from the crowd and should be the top seed heading into the playoffs. Chesapeake will be the number two seed, and even though they have been a bit inconsistent this season, they still are more than capable of making a run.
