Over the next few weeks, leading up to the beginning of the 2024 MD High School season, our staff will be releasing our Preseason Power 25. This list will be comprised of public schools across the state that we feel have a strong chance of being successful in 2024. Throughout the coming weeks, be on the lookout for our MD Public School Top 10, as well as a slew of additional preseason coverage.    

#7 Walt Whitman Vikings 

The Vikings made a deep run with an ultra-talented roster in 2023, eventually losing in the state quarterfinals to perennial powerhouse Severna Park. Whitman enters 2024 with yet another exciting roster and certainly has the pieces to make another deep run this spring. The departures of key players such as Liam Bowen, Mitchell Hwang, and their ace Lion Gardiner are tough to replace, however, Coach Cassidy returns a plethora of high-octane arms that all can carry their weight in the rotation. 

Led by senior Jacob Goldman and junior Wells Twining, the Vikings feature two of the more dominant and competitive arms across the state, as senior Ethan Murley and junior two-way standout Sammy Berman will provide nice depth on the back end. A true four-headed monster on the bump, look for the pitching success to be at the forefront of the Viking's deep playoff run.

Offensively, senior John Wayman is the table-setter at the top, with Berman, junior Cole Roman, and senior Gideon Schwartz providing firepower in the middle of the order. Senior Ethan Carboni will provide depth throughout and look for a somewhat "under-the-radar" junior in Dorian Smith to be a breakout bat in the lineup.
