Commitment Q&A with Lindenwood Commit Brodie Short

By: PBR Missouri Staff

C/INF Brodie Short (Lutheran, 2024; Lindenwood signee) is one of the top catchers in Missouri's 2024 class. Standing at 6-foot-1, 212-pounds, Short is packed with physicality and strength throughout his frame. That strength translates to the field where his left-handed swing produces exit velocities of 96.9 mph while posting a 79 mph velocity from behind the plate with a 1.88-2.09 pop time to pair.

We first saw Short at several Midwest Futures Scout Days where he performed well, earning his invite to the St. Louis Top Prospect Games and later the 2022 PBR Future Games. This past August, Short committed to Lindenwood.

We caught up with Brodie and talked with him about why he choose the Lions, how his recruiting process went, and more.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Short: My expectations were that if I played and worked hard then the right school would see me and give me a chance. Personally, I was looking for a school that showed me that I had an ability to play there, as well as a place that would give me the opportunity for as much improvement as possible.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Short: It never did, I was mainly looking for a school that stuck out to me in all the right way.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Short: My recruiting process really started to heat up at the end of junior year, schools had started to contact me and when summer ball started I began to get more notice. As far as I know Lindenwood first saw me in my first summer ball tournament when I was playing a game at Jefferson College.

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Short: Simple answer, the coaches. The great coaching staff is what really caught my attention about Lindenwood. Their experience and knowledge are two things that I hope will help me the most throughout my time in college.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Short: The only schools that I had on my list before committing to Lindenwood were Valparaiso and Jeffco.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Short: Jack Nobe (St. Francis Borgia, 2024; Xavier signee). Having Borgia in Lutheran Highs conference I’ve gotten the chance to play him every year so far. I’ve gotten a chance to see how he’s gotten better and every time I face him he’s always a tough out.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Short: I had been told that I was a good ball player since I was about 13 or 14 but I didn’t realize it myself until my freshman year, that’s when I started getting serious about playing baseball at a Division 1 level.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Short: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. That’s been the one thing I tell myself when I don’t feel like working out. If you want to be the best you have to train to be the best.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Short: Freshman year baseball was the most memorable time period in my baseball career, it was the only time that I will ever be able to play baseball with my brothers and it taught me so much in baseball and in maturity. The most memorable moment in my baseball career happened while playing at the future games, where I threw out three runners in two innings.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Short: Lutheran high baseball should be able to perform pretty well this upcoming season. If we work on a couple specific things we should be able to turn our program to a complete 360 compared to last season and that’s my hope from the program.
