Preseason High School Preview: Capital City

The 2024 Missouri high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Missouri. 

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Ozark come early June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Missouri. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason team rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

UPPERCLASSMEN TO KNOW 

UNDERCLASS FOLLOWS 

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Cavaliers fell in their District’s semi-final last spring, though enter 2024 with a roster capable of pushing past that point of the season. Their run prevention is a strength, as is their blend of young talent with upperclass experience. 

A staple for this program since his freshman year, INF/RHP Brock Miles (2024; St. Charles CC) figures to anchor the Cavaliers yet again. He’s hit in the middle of this lineup since his first year of high school ball and is expected to be a dynamic contributor on both sides of the ball. He hit .320 last year and reached base at a .412 clip while also pitching to a 2.50 ERA across 50 ⅓ innings on the mound. 

OF Zach Brown (2024) and RHP Brian Pace (2024) are two more seniors that should play big roles for this club. Brown should slot near the top of this lineup after a strong sophomore year in which he hit .339 with a .462 OBP, walking (17) more times than he struck out (10). Just like last year, Pace is a name you’ll see on the mound frequently for Capital City - he threw the second most innings on the club last spring, hurling 43 ⅓ frames. Look for INF Noah Nicklas (2024) and C Logan Meers (2024) to be consistent contributors for this team as well. 

OF/RHP Blake Holtmeyer (2025) is another name to know that’ll contribute on both sides of the ball and is someone that, internally, the Cavaliers are excited about for 2024. When he’s not patrolling center field, Holtmeyer will toe the rubber and be a reliable arm for Capital City after seeing success in 33 innings of work last year. 

A new and welcomed addition to this team, 1B/RHP Peyton Locke (2025) should provide positive contributions both offensively and on the mound. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound junior has middle-of-the-order talent at the plate and can also really pitch, bolstering this group even moreso.

Capital City’s youngsters are going to see the field regularly this spring with a multitude of underclassmen expected to contribute to the club in 2024. None may be as impactful as LHP/OF Chase Stieferman (2027; Mizzou commit), as one of the top freshmen in the Midwest looks to kick off his high school career on a high note. His strong left-handed swing will slot nicely into the middle of this lineup, but Stieferman’s highest contributions may ultimately come on the mound. There, he’s one of the more polished arms in the state, where he throws four legitimate above-average pitches for strikes, including a mid-to-upper-80s fastball from the left side. 

INF Chase Lewis (2026) and INF Luke Skinner (2026) are a pair of sophomores to look for on the infield this spring. UTL Shea Clark (2026) can bounce around anywhere defensively and OF Evan Schaffer (2026) adds more value with the glove in the outfield. Names like INF/RHP Colten Haskell (2026), OF/RHP John Langston (2026), and OF/RHP Jackson Briesacher (2026) could all see valuable innings out of the bullpen. 

BOTTOM LINE 

Though they’re young, Capital City does have a positive blend of experienced upperclassmen and talented youth. It may take them some time to find their rhythm early on, but the Cavaliers will be a team to watch in the Central Missouri Activities Conference.
