Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2020 Infielders

One hundred of the top players from across North Carolina converged on Pineville, NC and the On Deck Academy to take part in the PBR Preseason All-State event.  In its third year, the Preseason All-State event has become one of the premier events in North Carolina for high caliber high school players. 

Billed as one of the top events in the state, with an incredible roster put together the day did not disappoint.  Personal records, as well as event records were shattered throughout the day.  We open the complete look at the players in attendance with the 2020 infielders at the event.  A group of 8 players with links back to their video in the profiles below.

Preseason All-State - By the Numbers:

+ The event soldout in record time, over 20 days prior to the event
+ 95 of the 100 registrants showed up for the workout
+ 26 players in the Senior Class
+ 48 players in the Junior Class
+ 80 players ran a timed 30 yard dash.  Median time of 4.08 with 31 players running a 3.90 or better
+ 44 players worked out on the infield
+ 78 mph was median velocity of infielder’s positional throws.  12 players clocked 81 or higher
+ 28 players worked out in the outfield
+ 86 mph was the median positional throw from the outfield with 2 players above 90 mph.
+ 18 catchers workout behind the dish with 6 players recording a positional velocity of 76 mph or higher
+ 2.08 – 2.18 was the median Pop Time range for catchers
+ 9 catchers registered a best pop time of under 2.10 in the workout format
+ 35 pitchers worked out in the bullpen format
+ 83 mph was the median of the max fastballs from each pitcher
+ 13 arms touched 85 or better with one arm reaching 90 mph

 

Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2020 Infielders

 

Hogan Stallings 1B / Wake Forest, NC / 2020

 

Large frame.  Physical presence at 6 foot 5, 250-pounds.  Hits from the left side using a tall setup.  Small leg kick in his load with a medium length stride.  Quiet hands and bat head.  Gets his lower half through the ball generating above average bat speed.  Looks to drive the ball with lift in his swing.  Works gap to gap with barrel whip through the zone.  Exit velocity recorded at 90 mph.  Plays with average hands on the infield.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot. Accurate arm that topped at 70 mph.  Recorded a 4.39 in the 30-yard dash and 7-10 in the standing broad jump. 

Matthew Hancock 3B / 1B / St. Stephen's, NC / 2020

 

5 foot 11, 205-pound build.  Strength is present in the hands and lower half.  Right hand hitter who uses an open setup with low hands starting near the center of his chest.  Weight works back during the load with a medium length stride.  Hands work in a half circle down and back during the load.  Gets extension through the ball when on time and in sync with his load.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 84 mph.  Looks to play through balls on the infield. Hands and fee work with effort through his catch and release.  Fights for rhythm.  Uses a ¾ slot with some accuracy to his throws that topped at 65 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.21 in the 30-yard dash, 4.78 in the 5-10-5, and 7-6 in the standing broad jump.

Logan Sylvester 3B / 1B / Wesleyan Christian, NC / 2020

 

6 foot, 185-pound build.  Hits from the right side using a balanced setup.  Uses a leg kick for his load.  Strength in his swing with an uphill path.  Has pop to his pull side.  Gets extension with above average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 89 mph.  Average hands on the infield.  Clean exchanges, with a long arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Accurate arm that peaked at 81 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.02 in the 30-yard dash and 8-2 in the standing broad jump.

Colton Stotler 3B / SS / West Wilkes, NC / 2020

 

Strength is present in 6 foot, 205-pound frame.  Switch hitter.  Balanced setup from the right side with a small load and quiet hands and barrel.  Short bat path with a line drive approach, keeping his barrel in the zone.  Slightly open setup from the left side with more lift in the swing.  Fluid from both sides with above average bat speed.  Solid line-drive approach with feel for the barrel.  Should continue to switch hit in the future. High barrel awareness from both sides.  Exit velocity recorded at 84 mph from the left side and 85 mph from the right.  Average hands on the infield, with some stiffness in the lower half.  Good pre-contact touchdown.  Fluid feet to the ball.  Tends to catch off his right hip.  Clean exchanges, transferring near the right shoulder, with a short arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Accurate arm with carry, that topped at 83 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.11 in the 30-yard dash, 4.44 in the 5-10-5, and 8-10 in the standing broad jump. 

Jackson Bowman 2B / SS / Wesleyan Christian , NC / 2020

 

5 foot 9, 198-pound build with present athleticism.  Right hand hitter with a balanced, athletic setup.  Small leg kick in his load with his hands working back, in sync with his leg kick.  Barrel works short to the ball with a slight uphill path.  Solid rounds during front toss driving the ball with above average bat speed.  Works gap to gap with a line drive approach.  Strength in the swing with his exit velocity recorded at 88 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield active feet and average hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch, with a short arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Recorded a 3.93 in the 30-yard dash and 8-5 in the standing broad jump. 

Gavin Mortenson SS / 2B / Northwest Guilford, NC / 2020

 

Western Carolina commit.  Lanky, projectable build at 6 foot 2, 170-pounds. Hits from the right side using a balanced, athletic setup.  Loads against his back side with a small leg kick and some rhythm in his hands.  Balanced, fluid swing with barrel awareness and quick hands.  Works gap to gap with a line drive approach, keeping his barrel in the zone.  Average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Confident defender on the dirt.  Feet and hands work together with good rhythm.  Quick transfers and quick release with the ability to use different arm slots.  Accurate arm that topped at 85 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.12 in the 30-yard dash, 4.62 in the 5-10-5, and 8-4 in the standing broad jump.

Jacob Mabe SS / OF / West Stokes, NC / 2020

 

5 foot 7, 140-pound athletic build.  Hits from the right side with his hands back in a balanced setup.  Small leg kick during the load with a short stride.  Small hand pump during the load.  Quick hands with bat whip through the zone.  Some lift in the swing, looking to get extension.  Swing gets long at times but looks to do damage.  Finishes one-handed with a high release.  Exit velocity recorded at 86 mph.  Good pre-pitch movment and balance.  Active feet to the ball.  Average hands on the infield with high hips at the catch.  Clean transfers, with a short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Some feel for the bag with his arm topping at 78 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 3.99 in the 30-yard dash, 4.66 in the 5-10-5, and 7-5 in the standing broad jump. 

Daniel Stephens SS / OF / Pro 5 Academy , NC / 2020

 

6 foot 1, 175-pound athletic, projectable build. Right hand hitter with a balanced, athletic setup.  Smooth back in his load with his hands working down and back, with a short stride.  Some lift in his swing with and uphill path.  Strength is present.  Works mostly middle to his pull side with above average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 81 mph.  Plays athletic on the infield with looseness in his body.  Feet and hands work in rhythm. Soft hands, funneling to the belt after catch.  Clean exchanges with a loose arm and the ability to use different slots.  Arm peaked at 87 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.01 in the 30-yard dash and 9-2 in the standing broad jump.
