Team Carolina Future Games - NC Catcher & Dual RHP/CINF Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The PBR Future Games is the biggest underclass recruiting event in the country.  The 2019 version moved to LakePoint in Emerson, GA, and continued to grow in terms of the talent on the field and the coaches and schools in attendance.  Over 500 of the top uncommitted underclass players from across the country, and Canada, performed in front of over 320 college coaches and scouts.

For the second year, Team Carolina combined the top prospects from North Carolina and South Carolina.  Position players participated in a full pro-style workout on day 1, with most of the workouts coming on one field for the coaches and scouts.  The following three days saw Team Carolina take on Team Georgia, Team Florida, and Team Alabama.

As we continue our coverage of the 2019 PBR Future Games, we begin to jump into the individual player evaluations.  Today we look at the outfielders from North Carolina that represented Team Carolina.

Team Carolina Analysis - NC Catcher

Bryan Arendt C / 3B / Holly Springs , NC / 2021

Strong armed catcher came into the Future Games nursing an ankle that was severely sprained a few weeks ago.  While the ankle limited him on the bases and kept him out of the timed 60, it did not take away from his performance.  Athletic, with a strong, defined frame, standing 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.  Right handed hitter is balanced and athletic, with a smooth, rhythmic load, pushing his weight back to the back side.  Small stride with the bat launching from a vertical, slightly lagged position.  Direct, quick path, with leverage through the baseball creating back spin.  Worked gap-to-gap, showing power potential.  Exit velocity peaked at 92 off the barrel.  Good bend in the hips and the hands work with ease behind the dish.  Easy target.  Wants to block and corralled most balls within a few feet of his frame.  Shifts side to side with athleticism.  Quick feet and transfer, working across his chest to a short arm action and over-the-top release.  Carried 85 mph out of the hand, from the crouch.  Elite ride and good accuracy on throws.  Pop times ranged 1.93 – 1.94 in the workout.  Cut down 1 runner in game action with an accurate throw at 2.11.

Team Carolina Analysis - Dual P/CINF

Michael Gracer 1B / 3B / Northwest Cabarrus, NC / 2021

Strength is present in a mature 5-foot-11, 185 pound frame.  Potential dual prospect moving forward.  Right handed arm can spin the baseball.  Hard, 12/6, downer action on the curveball at 73-75.  Shows feel for the ability to land the pitch and expand down when ahead.  Fastball is straight, down from the HS season slightly sitting 81-83.  Simple delivery with a kick to the lower chest.  Loads the back side while the arm works through a long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot.  Above average arm speed.
Right handed hitter works from a tall, slightly open base.  Leg kick to load, striding with some aggression back to an even base.  Average bat speed with strength at contact.  Good leverage, elevating the baseball with some ease.  Pull side power potential.  In game, there is barrel awareness, working to stay more gap-to-gap than in the BP.  Good strike zone awareness.  Ran a 7.59 sixty.

Isaiah Lowe RHP / 3B / Christ School, NC / 2022

Powerful frame with a strength in the lower half, standing 6-foot-1, 205 pounds.  Potential dual prospect at the next level.  Live arm, still raw on the mound.  Fastball bumped 91, ranging 86-90.  Seemed to feel closeout situations with the stuff jumping toward the end of innings.  Attacked with a heavy fastball ratio.  Simple delivery with a small rocker and a leg lift to the belt.  Hips lead him out of balance, working level, on-line, and landing slightly closed with the foot at contact.  Long arm swing gets to a high-3/4 release.  Good arm speed.  Arm strength over arm speed.  Average extension.
In the box, a right handed hitter with raw strength.  Balanced, athletic stance with a small leg kick to load the weight.  Small stride.  Works for extension with average bat speed.  Pull side power is present.  Average barrel awareness.  Exit velocity peaked at 98 mph.  A good athlete in the strong frame, ran a 7.23 sixty.   On the infield, works with a stable lower half, hands are out front, funneling to the midsection.  Long arm swing to a high-3/4 release.  Easy carry and accuracy.  82 across the diamond.  Good bend in the hips.
