Inside the Rankings is a unique look through the eyes of Prep Baseball scouts, allowing players, fans, and coaches to get to know some of the top players in the state of North Carolina.  Rankings in the state are updated almost quarterly, as players are transitioning from one season to another.  Prep Baseball scouts will use the information they gain from Prep Baseball events, Prep Baseball Tournaments, game coverage, workouts, and practices to put grades on as many players in the state as possible.  With over 400 players in each graduating class committing to play college baseball from North Carolina, this is a state with a ton of talent.

Today we take a look at two high profile middle-infielders.  Both Mason Hughes and Neil Griffin are scheduled to be at the 2024 NC ProCase, taking place at Diamond Xtreme in Kernersville, NC on February 11th.

Inside the Rankings: Battle of the Shortstops

Mason Hughes SS / RHP / Cape Fear High, NC / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 31 / POS: 7 Hughes a range left handed hitting SS from Cape Fear HS. Mason has been moving up the state rankings and into pro prosect status after a huge summer and fall. Defensively, there is advanced range and feel for the glove.  Add a big arm with carry and Hughes should have the ability to stick at SS. Offensivley, Hughes is very dynamic in the box with gap power. Loose and whippy, he uses a vertical hand load that helps him get the most with his above average hand speed. His feet also play a big part in the way he plays, never satisfied, and always looking to take the extra bag. Hughes will be followed very close throughout his senior year. Hughes is Commited to Charleston Southern.

Neil Griffin SS / 2B / Metrolina Christian, NC / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 21 / POS: 5 Griffin a athletic right hand hitting SS from Metrolina Christian. In the box Griffin uses an up right stance with a rhythmic upper half load and minimal leg load. Driving the baseball gap to gap with an advanced barrell feel. Power will continue to develop as he matures and continues to gain strength. Known for being good athlete Griffin has posted a 1.65 10 yard split and a 6.80 60 yard dash time.  He posses an above average glove allowing him to look effortless making routine plays. A quick release helps him compensate for a average arm allowing him to make every throw needed. The ECU commit will be a fun follow this season.
