Rankings: Initial Class of 2027 Rankings

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Scouting Director

PBR and its team of scouts work through fall, spring and summers to track and get to know players across the country.  A big difference between PBR and other entities following high school players is the coverage.  PBR has its scouts spread across the country with the largest scouting staff of any baseball organization in the country.  North Carolina's scouting efforts are led by Brandon Hall, a former D1 Recruiting Coordinator in North Carolina, with 20+ years of evaluating and development experience.

As PBR Scouts put together their list for each graduating class, they are working to see players in PBR Events, PBR Tournaments, workouts, games, and practices.  As our team of scouts see players they will put a player grade on each player and a confidence rating on that grade.  The more our scouting staff sees a player, especially working to see them in different environments, the higher the confidence rating will become on a player's grade.

Once a player has his grade and confidence rating, those players are put into our rankings database. As we prepare the rankings, our scouting staff blacks out the player names, school, and any commitments.  Along with the player grade and confidence rating, we can also see individual tool ratings.  Players are then sorted by their player grade on confidence ratings.  Our scouting staff can work with players with similar grades to position them based on the their tool grades as well.  Once the list is formed, player names and their information is added back to the list, where scouts will make any final adjustments to the list.

In North Carolina, there are anywhere from 3-5 eyes on the rankings list.  There are debates, and even arguments as the final list is put together at any age level.  For the 2027 class, this list is probably a little early, but it does create some talking points and some follow lists as we head toward the winter workout sessions.  Look for this list to grow after the 2023 PBR Preseason All-State events.  As the 2027 Class moves through their high school career, we anticipate approximately 450 college commitments from the state of North Carolina in the class.  With this initial Class of 2027 Rankings, we work up the top 30 in the state of North Carolina.  The initial impression is this group has a lot of high end talent, as well as depth.  There will be movement in these rankings and there are a ton of really good players that will be listed in our future rankings updates.

JFG Into The Rankings

The PBR Future Games is the top underclass event in the country, featuring teams from across the country, put together by PBR Scouts, all competeing at LakePoint in Emerson, GA.  The event typically draws 400-500 college coaches, and MLB Scouts.  While the event is geared toward the rising SO and JR classes, the Jr. Future Games is run at the same time, giving rising FR the chance to see the full power of PBR on display, while also competing in a high level event with some of the top talent in the country.

Players heading to the Jr. Future Games go through a full workout and then play a minimum of four games against other PBR territories.  Players that rep Team Carolina are able to be around our North Carolina scouts for a full week, where the scouting staff gets an advanced feel for the players in attendance, both on and off the field.  So there is no surprise that the early look at the 2027 class would feature a heavy contingent of JFG players.

Previewing the Top 10

Look for the list of the players in the Class of 2027 to grow in the coming months.  For now, PBR Scouts cut the list off at the Top 30 players in the state.  The biggest reason for the cutoff at No. 30 was the confidence level in the grades.  As our scouts see these players this winter, and then this spring, expect a ton of content so you can get to know the class of 2027.
