2024 Spring Team Preview: Londonderry (NH)

LONDONDERRY, N.H. - What a way to pick up coaching win number 300.

The accomplishment by Brent Demas came in the state championship game a year ago, a 4-3 win over Pinkerton to cap off a 22-1 season for the Lancers of Londonderry.

The veteran mentor is expecting nothing less this season after winning a state title for the fifth time in his 19 years at the helm.

“Our program focuses on details more so than others,” noted Demas. “We have high expectations for the players and coaches.”

If year 20 in charge of Londonderry is to be special, the top three arms from last season’s squad must be replaced.

“While we lost three exceptional pitchers, we are rolling out a deep staff again this year,” explained Demas, who will be without graduates Connor Fennell (Dayton), Kevin Rourke (UMass-Lowell) and Mike Crowley (Assumption), who combined for 21 of the 22 wins by the Lancers last season.

Seniors Jonathan Wilson, Joey Carfaro and Ryan Williams, juniors Brady Gillis, Devin Boles and Ryan Perry and sophomore Jaylen Stott are being counted on to lead the way on the mound according to the Londonderry head coach. Wilson, the 24th-ranked 2024 left-handed pitcher in New England, is a Southern New Hampshire commit.

“All are quality varsity arms who we are excited about,” expressed Demas. “Jonathan Wilson, Devin Boles and Brady Gillis are going to be top arms for us. We aren’t concerned with their lack of varsity innings, they will be ready.”

There is more that brings optimism for the 2024 campaign.

“This is a very balanced team with a great blend of experience and talent,” Demas related. “Our offense is well-balanced with many two-year guys.”

Returnees for Londonderry include seniors Owen Carey (Rutgers), Jayden Hamilton and Johan Pena along with juniors Jet Jones and Brett McKinnon. Jones, the third-rated 2025 catcher in New England, drove in the winning run to cap a three-run bottom of the eighth to rally the Lancers to the state title in 2023.

“They were all significant contributors on last year’s team,” Demas said.

Stott and Zach Green are others expected to play important roles for Londonderry this season.

“Jaylen will be taking over second base and he is someone we are excited for,” Demas noted. “Zach Green has excellent athletic ability and we expect a very fast outfield.”

But there is some uncertainty.

“In terms of weaknesses, we have possible questions around first base and a fairly young outfield,” Demas noted. “We will see though.”

But in a program that has won seven state titles in all, optimism is always there.

“This team has played together over the past two years,” pointed out Demas, who expects the Lancers to be “competitive” in a league full of parity. “We have a good time and are efficient with our time. At game time their passion comes out and that is always when you want it to.

“The keys to success are to focus on what is in front of you, execute your roles and have fun.”
