PBR Canada Collegiate Performers of the Week

With the college season kicking off over the last week to 10 days, Canadians are already making an impact in the collegiate game and our PBR brothers across the country have been in attendance to capture some of the highlights.

Every week, we'll highlight one hitter and one pitcher to be our PBR Canada Collegiate Players of the Week powered by Mizuno. Our first pair of players are JUCO prospects who started off the season hot right out the gates.

OFFENSIVE SIDE

TYLER SMALL SS / 2B / ST. MARTIN , ON / 2018

Background: Small was a scrappy, undersized shortstop with high IQ and a well-rounded game back in 2018, coming out of a strong Ontario recruiting class. The Ontario Blue Jays product made an immediate impact in 2019 at NEO with an eye-popping .398/.531/.591 slash line and six home runs as a freshman. Even more impressive, he struck out just 17 times in 54 games, compared to his 47 walks.

Performance: It may have just been an exhibition game but it didn’t take long for Small to get back into form as he sprayed four hits in the Norsemen’s opener, including a home run, three RBI’s and two runs scored. Small is still a sophomore following the washed out 2020 season and should draw significant interest from four-year programs as he continues to tear up Division I NJCAA pitching.

STAT LINE: 4 H, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

ON THE MOUND

JACOB POTTER RHP / SPECTRUM, BC / 2018

Background: Southeastern Oklahoma State right-hander Jacob Potter is an arm from out West and we didn’t see a ton of him during his amateur career, but he’s putting together the pieces now in his second year in Oklahoma. Potter spent a year with Allen Community College and his sophomore year with Galveston College before landing with the Savage Storm. In 2019-2020 Potter threw 40.1 innings with an ERA of 2.70 while striking out 32 and walking just eight. Although it was a shortened season, it was a breakout year for Potter and he didn’t miss a beat to begin the 2021 season.

Performance: Potter took the ball in Southeastern Oklahoma’s season opener and threw six shutout innings with 12 strikeouts and just two walks. In what was the junior, Victoria, B.C. native’s most dominant collegiate performance yet, he only allowed three hits but ultimately ended with the no-decision, following his team’s 6-5 walk-off victory over East Central University.

STAT LINE: 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 K, 90 pitches
