PBR Canada Collegiate Performers of the Week

Every week, we'll highlight one hitter and one pitcher to be our PBR Canada Collegiate Players of the Week which is powered by Mizuno. This is the 12th week and we have two fresh faces who went off for their respective programs in Luke Turino and Mathieu Gauthier.

THE OFFENSIVE SIDE

Hitter of the Week
Luke Turino, Georgetown College

Background: PBR Ontario saw lots of Luke Turino back when he ranked 6th in the 2016 class which was led by current pros Andy Yerzy and Jordan Balazovic. Turino was an exciting, well-rounded prospect who originally attended the University of Cincinnati. He’s battled some injuries but looks to be in fine form at the moment. Still in his sophomore year, Turino has been an offensive leader for Georgetown as he leads the team in RBI and ranks second in home runs.

Performance: This past week may have been one of Turino’s best in his college career as he picked up hits in all five of the Tigers games and went deep in four of the five games. Over five games this past week, the former Toronto Mets infielder went 7-for-18 with four home runs, four runs scored, 15 RBI and a walk. Turino was a key contributor as Georgetown picked up four wins this week to improve to 27-15 and now rank third in the Mid-South Conference.

STAT LINE: 5 games played… 7-for-18, 4 HR, 4 R, 15 RBI, BB

ON THE MOUND

Pitcher of the Week
Mathieu Gauthier, West Texas A&M College

Background: Gauthier was an exciting right-hander coming out of Quebec in 2016 as he originally attended NC State and made ten appearances as a freshman in the ACC. He really jumped on the scene nationally at T12 where he was dominant for the Quebec team at the Rogers Centre in high school. To boot, NC State qualified for the NCAA tournament in each of his three seasons before Gauthier transferred to West Texas A&M for the 2020 season. Gauthier, in his senior year, is currently 9-2 with a 2.79 ERA and has 84 strikeouts to just 14 walks.

Performance: While Gauthier didn’t hit double digit strikeouts like he’s done twice this year, it was easily the Montreal native’s most efficient start of the year. Gauthier picked up the win while throwing seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits, no walks and picking up nine strikeouts. Gauthier has been the ace of Buffs pitching staff this year and the club is currently 29-4, ranked 4th in the NCAA DII polls.

STAT LINE: 7 innings pitched… W, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 9 K
