Three State Champions Crowned

Championship Saturday was highlighted by a 10 inning marathon followed by two games dominated by pitching. Following is a recap of all three championship games.

Charleston Catholic 8, Ravenswood 2 (CLASS A)

Charleston Catholic jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 8-1 in capturing their second Class A championship in the past four years.  John Hufford went the distance allowing two earned runs on eights hits for the win.  Luke McKown had a big day offensively going 3-for-4 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

St. Albans 8, Hurricane 2 (CLASS AAA)

Jake Carr jump started the St. Albans' offense by leading off the game with a home run to right field and the Red Dragons never looked back.  Chayce Matheny tossed 6.2 innings of five hit baseball allowing just two earned runs for the win.  Ridge Lester came on to get the final out for the save. St. Albans got contributions up and down the lineup from its offense tallying 13 hits on the day.

Bridgeport 7, Weir 0 (CLASS AA)

The chase for a 4th consecutive state title was anticlimactic as the Indians scored early and often in downing Weir in five innings for a state record run of four titles in four years.  10 Bridgeport hits, five Weir errors and an efficient effort on the mound from Brayden Lesher (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER) was more than enough in the run shortened final.  Gordon Swiger (2-3, 2 3B, 3 RBI) and Gatorade West Virginia Player of the Year Drew Hefner (2-4, 3B, RBI) led the Indians' offense.  J.T. Harris also went 1-for-2 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot.
