Updated West Virginia Class of 2017 Rankings Released

By Greg Williams
West Virginia Director of Scouting

As we move into December and the end of the calendar year draws near, it is time for our final update to our statewide player rankings for 2016. During the course of this month we will look at updates to the rankings in the Class of 2017, 2018 and 2019. Today we concentrate on the Class of 2017.

The top ten prospects in this class include seven that already signed National Letters of Intent in November. Marshall University leads the way garnering a pair of recruits from the list while three players have opted to attend schools outside of West Virginia.

The biggest change in this update is at the top where former No. 1 RHP Philip Hoffman (Wahama) and former No. 2 RHP Aaron Perry (Hurricane) swap spots at the top of the rankings.

Perry made a name for himself this summer at several stops on a national scale while playing with the Kentucky Baseball Club. The Kentucky recruit caused some buzz in October in Jupiter, Florida when he came out pumping 93-94 before settling into the 88-91 range. He also mixed in a sharp slider in the low to mid 80s. The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder logged three innings and allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Perry jumped to No. 60 in the most recent update to the PBR overall rankings for this class which includes players from all 34 states in the PBR coverage area.

The righty will represent West Virginia in Chicago, IL on February 5th in the prestigious PBR Super 60 Pro Showcase. Previous West Virginia prospects to have participated in this annual event include Logan Goodnight (Penn State - 2016), Matt Harrison (Marshall - 2016), Zach Minnick (Campbell - 2015), Michael Grove (West Virginia - 2015) and Shane Ennis (West Virginia - 2014).
