Q&A with Marshalltown CC commit Thomas Sanchez

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Wisconsin/Illinois

Thomas Sanchez is a 2014 LHP from Holmen HS and has recently made his college commitment to Marshalltown CC in Iowa. We caught up with Sanchez and got his thoughts on recruiting and his commitment.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Sanchez: I expected it to be hard to find a school that was a good fit. I found out that there were a lot of schools that I could see myself at, so it was a hard decision, but I had help from friends that had previously went through the process and were already committed.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Sanchez: This summer playing with the MN Starz and qualifying for Team Wisconsin really got my name out there and got me in front of recruiters.

PBR: Where did the Marshalltown first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Sanchez: I think Coach Grife saw me on my Field Level account that my summer coach set up. After that we talked, and I came down for a visit/ workout.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Sanchez: I was looking for a coach that could make me the best baseball player I can be. Also I wanted to feel comfortable in the atmosphere of the school and town.

PBR: What do you like most about Marshalltown and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Sanchez: I really like Coach Grife, and the history he has of developing players, especially pitchers. Also I believe there are a lot of opportunities to continue my baseball career by going the JUCO route.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Sanchez: University of Sioux Falls, Upper Iowa University, Ellsworth CC, and Cornell

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Sanchez: The best player I have faced in Wisconsin is my teammate Jeren Kendall. I have faced in many times in a practice setting and once at the Wisconsin High School baseball Showcase. He is a great hitter, and an even bigger threat on the bases.

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?

Sanchez: I follow a training program of cardio and weightlifting, and I do my baseball specific workouts (hitting, throwing, fielding) at Jeremey Kendall’s MVP facility in Holmen, WI.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Sanchez: We should be pretty solid. We will be going for our 3rd straight conference title, and that is a big goal. Another goal is to go as deep as possible in the playoffs this year.
